I am starting on a new project that utilizes mid to advance level excel skills (functions, making graphs, pivot charts, vlookups, truncating text, if statements) and my excel skills are pretty basic. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to quickly get up to speed and improve my excel skills. Learningtree?
Thank you! |
| I read books but I found that the best way was just to figure out what I needed when I needed it. Maybe it's just my learning style though. |
| YouTube videos for the specific Excel functions/tasks you are attempting to accomplish for the specific version of Excel you are using. |
| Lol, these are basic Excel skills. |
Yep, you can learn just about anything from YouTube videos. Also, I agree with the PP that these are not advanced skills. They're pretty basic. |
You sound really cool. Are you really cool? |
I am really cool. |
I love you. |

I found the best way to sharpen my skills was to need them for the specific job I was doing.
There are TONS of quick tutorials for every Excel function. I don't use, for example, INDEX-MATCH functions on a daily basis, but whenever I need to, I can look them up. You need to practice. You also need to make sure every single thing you do passes the sniff test. Check your pivot table against your data to make sure it makes sense. If it seems off, run it again in on a new sheet and futz with the parameters until it seems right. Build in checks and balances -- if your table tells you there are 25 instances of value X, then go run a "find" search on the data and see if it returns 25. |
| Ask for help from another co-worker to sit and show you in one hour and then offer to buy lunch. Also, the book Excel for Dummies? |

Do you have access to skillsoft online training classes? Everything you are looking for would be covered in an online class.
The other thing I would do is list all the things you need to increase your fluency. Depending on your learning style either buy a book or watch you tube videos. Do one thing at a time - charts vlookups functions if thens pivot tables Start with things your are more comfortable with and add on. FYI - vlookups, truncating text, pivot tables are not basic excel functionality. |
| I think an online class or book is a great way to start - mainly so that you know what's possible. Once you have an idea of what you want to do in an given instance, you can use the help function or tutorials to figure out exactly how to implement it. |
| I really liked the program Excel Everest |
| Websites like Alison should have Excel classes for free. I also agree with YouTube videos. Good luck, I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. |
