Obama overturns stem cell ban

"Promoting science isn't just about providing resources, it is also about protecting free and open inquiry," Obama said. "It is about letting scientists like those here today do their jobs, free from manipulation or coercion, and listening to what they tell us, even when it's inconvenient especially when it's inconvenient. It is about ensuring that scientific data is never distorted or concealed to serve a political agenda and that we make scientific decisions based on facts, not ideology."

As someone who concieved through IVF, and has "extra" embryos, I am hoping that they can be used for research purposes. Too many people in my family, and other people I love could benefit from furthering scientific research in this area.

It's so refreshing to have someone who respects science in the White House.

Me too. I'd much rather have someone in the White House who respects science over life.

A reasonable, thoughtful decision that will help many people and may save or prolong many lives. Bravo to Obama. And to the Americans who elected him.

You don't have to use an embryo for stem cells. It is such a huge debate, and makes so many people uncomfortable, I think the funding should go towards research with non-embryonic stem cell research.

If only he was capable of being so thoughtful on the economy. No one will have money to get treatment at the rate we're going. Maybe basic survival will be of greater importance. We are no immune to living like many other 3rd world countries.

Funding goes toward that, too. No worries. 8)

YAY! I love that this was over-turned.

Here's a great link to Ron Reagan discussing some of the "politics" of this, and it really IS political.

Maybe you hadn't noticed, but science keeps people alive occasionally. A cursory Web search is rife with examples, if you're still skeptical.

Some people love their "extra" embryos. Why don't you get some embryos to donate.
