Anyone familiar with the aftercare program at Oakland Terrace in SS/Kensington?
I am a bit concerned about the on site program run by the YMCA because all the grades are together and they are in the cafeteria. The reason that I mention the cafeteria is because I know someone with a child there and she keeps him at home (meaning she has to take the day off) when school is out of session because "what would he do in a cafeteria all day?" I know that some private after care programs are more like daycare and provide programming on the days that school is not in session. But, unfortunately, I don't think we can get into one connected to the school and even if we did it seems unfair to my child to make DC ride in a school bus to aftercare, then play there for less than an hour, then get picked up by me. Trying to decide between the aftercare and a babysitter. Thanks. |
The kids don't stay in the cafeteria the entire time they are in the after care program. The YMCA staff will take them outside when the weather is nice. They also take them to the gymnasium to run and play. The staff will work with them on homework assignments as well. When the kids are in the cafeteria, there are games for them to play, and sometimes they will show a movie. There are kids of all ages (K - 5th grade), so the younger kids have the opportunity to get to know the "big kids" in the upper grades. |
