| I have been witnessing transformation of elementary schools in Ward 3 over the last 5 years, and with this part of town seeing continued demographic change, I think that we will continue to see overall improvements at the Ward 6 Elementary Schools. Although I don't think they will be at the level of the "Tier 1" elementary schools in the city (JKLMM), I think these schools will be strong "Tier 2" type schools that will be the next best thing. Specifically I see Brent, Ludlow-Taylor, Maury, Van Ness, and Amidon-Bowen as being great options in the next 5 years. What does everyone else think? |
| I don't know A-B and Van Ness isn't open yet but I'd say the others you name are already great options. Also SWS, Tyler Spanish, and there are plenty of people really happy at Miner and JO Wilson. |
| I agree. It's just a matter of time. |
| With all due respect, Brent is already the next best thing, and Maury is not far behind. Like most things, although Brent is not perfect, the Principal and PTA have set their sights on achievable goals for improvement. Don't underetimate the importance of fundraising and active parental involvement, which may be where Title i schools like Tyler and Van Ness could fall short in terms of classroom resources and extracurriculars. In spite of legacy sibling preference, SWS is in a different category as it continues its transition to a citywide school. Miner, JO Wilson and Tyler SI seem to do PK really well, but their paths to higher performance are more complicated. |
| Walker Jones? |
| You're forgetting Peabody ("the Cluster"). Is JO Wilson ward 6? I'd definitely put that above Van Ness and A-B. |
|
While it may now be within Ward 6, WJ is an EC, not an ES. |
One percent White (5 students?, one percent Asian, two percent Latino, and abysmal test scoares. What else is there to say? |
Most of the non-sibs at SWS live on or near Cap Hill. More sour grapes from shut-out neighbors? |
| No sour grapes here. Just a fact: SWS no longer has IB or proximity preferences. |
As a PP said, with all due respect, Brent is already there, solidly there. It is highly sought after. |
Just didn't want the OP to leave it out of the self-congratulatory Ward 6 love. |
| Ward 6 love, self-congratulatory or not, only gets you so far. Then you have to face the music in terms of middle schools. |
| Some of you really don't want to see schools get better |
| Huh? |
