Bancroft...chances of getting Deal yanked in nearish future?

Anonymous
I'm trying to finalize my lottery list. Bancroft is high on it ONLY due to the dual language plus Deal feed. Is there a good chance that it won't feed to Deal in the next...10ish years?

i think it is not assured. If they actually wait until 2022 to even start considering a new boundary revision, Deal and Wilson will be very overcrowded. This mayor can say whatever she wants, but if the schools are bursting at the seams I don't think she will have a choice but to change boundaries before 2022.

Unless someone else has a suggestion? I doubt they will revisit feeder rights for OOB students either.

No one has a crystal ball but I would think that Bancroft would be safe. It survived the first round of redistricting and seems to have good demographics for remaining a Deal feeder (group of highly motivated/organized upper SES parents lots of hispanic kids that make the optics of changing the feeder pattern problematic). That said, if you are OOB, it's not that easy to get in - at least for the year we are lotterying for (prek-4). Good luck

Eaton was rezoned against many expectations.

Bancroft nor Shepherd will be "zoned" out of Deal. The two schools bring diversity into Deal, otherwise it will most likely be "all" white.

Isn't Eaton a very diverse school? It was rezoned.

Yes, but they were already working on phasing Eaton out of Deal by making it Deal/Hardy years ago. Now it is simply Hardy.

Yes, but no one went to Hardy from the school and the school was vehemently against it, so "phasing out" is a strong term. And not sure why that changes the diversity as an argument for keeping a school in Deal. Would you suggest Lafayette get zoned out of Deal next?

Eaton is mostly diverse because of the OOB students.

Eaton is mostly diverse because of the OOB students.

Does that make a difference?

Both Shepherd and Bancroft in the original proposals were highlighted as possible moves to new middle schools when they are up and running. Given Deal will be bursting at the seams, if these new Ward 4 and Ward 2 middle schools do get up and running, these school could indeed be moved. I'd suspect that will be some time away, probably 2022, but who knows. But in general, no school has an absolute right to feed anywhere. You can hope and try to make arguments, but at the end of the day, you have no rights to certain schools based on where you live that the city cannot change tomorrow if needed. Period.

School year 2015-16, my DC will be in K at Bancroft. This may be the last class that feeds to Deal according to the PP comment. Our 9 month old will hopefully have sibling preference when the time comes.

This. Any kid entering Bancroft in PK3/4 next year is going to Deal. After 2022 we'll just have to see what happens, but I don't see Bancroft getting removed from Deal between now and the next citywide boundary review process. And my bet is that such review will be delayed as usual. As for getting in at PK3 and PK4, it has varied a lot over the past few years, but last year there were a few spots for OOB non-sib, IIUC. Good luck!

I am pretty sure the people who have 1st graders at Eaton thought they would be going to Deal. Things can change quickly. If McFarland opens in 2017-2018 things could change again.

But Eaton had worse politics in that the diversity at the school was mainly OOB and since few people from the neighborhood attended it probably didn't have as much local political support. Plus some of the OOB kids are from Mt P and so can still go to Deal so those parents probably weren't advocating for eaton as vocally. But yes, any school could lose its Deal feeder and moving away from neighborhood middle schools could happen too. But the only schools I would be more confident will stay at Deal are Murch and Janney.
