| Give me a hit list of things I should think about buying as a new SAHM. My style tends to be preppy/trendy with a slight bohemian edge. For my previous work clothes I was a a pencil skirt and great heels kind of gal. Not sure where to go with the SAHM thing. My kids are 5 and 3. Thanks! |
| sweat pants |
| Why bother to respond if you are going to insincere and snitty? |
| Designer jeans (Joe's, Citizens etc), cool flats (Tory etc), big bag (not diaper), blousy tops or fitted sweaters, cardigan sets. In summer, capris/shorts/minis, with fitted polo or casual fitted Ts, cute sundresses, with cute flat sandals (Tory, Jack Rogers etc) |

I am not a fashionista, but I do okay. I wear super cheap with the super pricey....so, great jeans and shirts from J Crew. Only cashmere sweaters (wait until the puking is over) and NEVER clunky shoes. Jewelry goes a long way.
The best moms I see look natural and comfortable, in that Ralph Lauren ad kind of way. Just be yourself and keep your hair looking good. Oh, and an amazing pair of sunglasses hide a multitude of sins (the new Pucci's look really good) |
And what do the fashionable SAHM's who are not loaded with cash wear? Gap, Jcrew, Banana Republic? Really, who has cash for Joe's, Tory, Citizens? |
| Hey, buy cheap, get cheap. When in doubt, buy better shoes and accessories. Esp. if body is all post-baby crazy. |
|
I say spend a lot on things like jeans and shoes, buy less expensive t-shirts, tops, fun necklaces/bracelets.
And if you can pair your Target sundress with a pair of Tory's, all the better.
It doesn't hurt to try stores like Nordstrom Rack and Filene's Basement for pretty good deals. Especially on jeans and shoes! |

Stylish dark jeans (even if they are Target or Old Navy). Cute, trendy (but not too young and not poor quality) tops. Nice (or nice-looking) flats -- Target has surprisingly cheap and cute flats. A nice (or nice-looking) bag -- I second the idea of using a large regular bag instead of a diaper bag. Cute, fun jewelry (and this can be super cheap) -- chunky necklace or dangly earrings.

| My only advice is to stay away from capri pants or cropped pants. I haven't seen anyone look good in those yet. OK, maybe Elle McPherson. Seriously, they are not at all flattering. they make your legs look short and stumpy, and they're matronly. Yet it seems like every woman in DC is wearing a pair in summertime. |
| PP, you are so right. They look good on NO ONE. Long pants or a nice walking short, that is all!!! |
| Shorts look silly on grown-ups. Save them for backyard bbqs. |
| OK, no capris and no shorts in the summer? What do you wear then? BTW, I think the cafe cut of capri at Jcrew is pretty good-- I wear my white ones a lot in the summer with a great top and ballet flats or cute sandles. I am also a huge sundress fan, but be careful to avoid the forever 21 store type dresses. Dress for your age, can still be cute. |

H & M has some great spring clothes, inexpensive linen, cool jeans, tanks, accessories...if you really want cheap but trendy try forever 21-but just know they are "disposable clothes", cute, but wont last more than 6 mos or so. I actually bought all of my "transition wear" after I had babies from Forever 21 b/c I knew I'd be losing the baby weight and didnt want to invest in expensive size 14 clothes...I could buy 8 items from forever 21 for under $100.
Agree that you should try to match the cheap buys with either nice jewelry, scarves, shoes, bags-no more frumpy diaper bags after baby is like 6 mos old.. The most fashionable thing to wear is confidence and inner happiness!!! |
| Huge JCREW fan. Mix it up with some Target and some great jeans and Tory or similar look and you are good to go! |
