8 vs 12 hour days

Anonymous
Help me decide.
I work part time in healthcare. Basically I must work every other weekend sat and sun 830-430. That is two days every two weeks. Then if I want to pick up shifts on weekdays, I can chose any hours.
So I have been doing my every other weekend, plus monday -Thursday from 9-1.

So every other week I get paid for 8 days x4 hours=32 plus 14 for weekends, therefore TOTAL 56 hours every 2 weeks. But I work 10 days for that.

I take no extra shifts during summer or holidays etc, just my every other weekend.

So, now we have the choice for 12 hour shifts. Not sure if I should, take it?
I could work 5 12 hour shifts for the same money. My kids are 15 and 13. My husband would have to take over the after school pick ups because there is no busing to the children's school.
Would you take it?
I could choose 12 hours on weekends and short shifts during the week also.
Weekday shifts can be the hours of my choosing. The shorter shifts allow me to drop off and pick up kids at school.

8 hour shifts are paid for 7 hours
4 hour shifts pay for 4 hours.
12 hours shifts pay for 10.5.

Advice???

I need to wrap my head around something- how is it legal to pay you 7 hours for an 8 hour shift or 10.5 hours for a 12 hour shift?

Because of unpaid lunches.

OP here, the 12 hour shifts are day shifts either 830-830 or 9-9.

You only should get an unpaid 30 min lunch. The 3 15 min breaks are paid.

I'm in Canada. can you actually answer the question?

Another Canadian here.. This is typical for 12 hour shift.

OP, If you can swing it for child care of whatever life hinges y have to work around, I'd go for the 12s. When I worked in health care, we did 4 x 12 / 3 x 12 rotation and I loved it. You end up with extra days off, or what feels like extra days off, which is especially nice when the too-short summer comes

OP here, I do like the 12s but they are LONG.

I hated the 12 hour shifts when I did it. 9-1 must fly by and you still have time to run errands.
