Hilton Head or Kiawah?

Anonymous
Two families heading to the beach this summer. Four kids in total ages 5-9. Haven't been to either beach. If you've been, which is more kid/family friendly? We don't want to just be at the beach all day. Also want to do activities and be able to go to restaurants. Thanks!

HH is more commercial, and that being said, there is more to do. Both have tons of golf, beaches, pools. But HH has a ton of restaurants, while the restaurants on Kiawah, IMO, are not that good. I have found myself driving off-island every night last time I was there. HH has a ton more options for rental, from houses, condos, etc to sailing and zodiac rides, parasailing, jet skis. As I write this, Kiawah may be all you need! But if you want to get out, HH!!!

HH for sure. Beach, Harbor Town, stables/farm animals for the kids, movie theater for not nice days, tons of restaurants. Kiawah is nice, but not nearly as developed.

HHI - this will be our 7th year.

HH- restaurants are ok but we grilled and cooked so we didn't care ..

Great restaurants in HHI: Low Country Backyard, Skullcreek Boathouse, Frankie Bones, Wiseguys, Michael Anthony, Fat Baby Pizza.

HHI is a better bet for you. You will have to pick where you want to stay. Sea Pines has the nicest beaches as long as you avoid south beach area(the beach drops of there with a strong current).

Kiawah is higher end. Depends what you want.

Completely agree.

Take the ferry to Daufuskie Island for a day trip from HH and rent a golf cart to tour the island.

I agree with this too. I do agree with other posters that the food on Kiawah isn't very good though. Our kids are grown so we go into Charleston a few evenings and there are places just off-island that are pretty good. We also cook fish a few nights so that pretty much gets us through the week

We actually have been going to both during summer vacation for last 10 years. HH then Last 4 days or so on Kiawah. It is on the way home.

Kiawah much smaller and definitely higher end. What do you want I know? How old are kids?

Re: Kiawah food - hege's is excellent. Same with jasmine porch. And we always do a night at cherrywood ale house for BBQ.

The Fat Hen, about 20 minutes away, is one of my favorite places on earth. Most delicious food anywhere.
