Let's talk high schools.

Hi all,

I know there's a number of threads on individual high schools, but can we chat about options/experiences here as well? Here's our situation:

We are zoned for Northwestern, hoping our kid gets into Roosevelt (he's in 7th grade). However, we need a plan B. And maybe C, D, and E. A challenge: we're not really down with Catholic schools (we're Jewish).

Where are your kids going?

Ask his teachers which high schools they recommend for him.And talk to him about setting goals to get in: do all your home, work for A's, sign up an academic summer school program, take a test prep class in Fall of 8th grade.

Here's a list of specialty programs.

Besides science and tech at Roosevelt, my kids' teachers recommended the high school program at PG Community College, and maybe the p RT orgasm at Suitland. I was surprised they didn't know much about the visual arts program at Northwestern. I know some kids there who like it.

Of the people I know in South county...some like the magnet program at Oxon Hill High and most others are doing private schools in DC or Alexandria (some with financial aid and some without). I also know someone who works in another county and pays the nonresident tuition for their child to attend public high school in the county. I think once the high school starts for all the graduates of the French and Spanish immersion schools that will be a great option as well eventually.
