Locked Bedroom Doors

Anonymous
Kids are 13 (boy) and 11 (girl). Our house is a new build and all the bedrooms have locks on the doors. What's are appropriate rules regarding locked doors? I've explained that the kids aren't allowed to lock their doors but we all must knock for permission to enter. I want them to have their personal space but I don't feel comfortable with locked doors (DH doesn't either). Thoughts?

We locked doors when getting dressed. Otherwise doors were usually unlocked.

Change out the doorknobs if this is a problem. The only doors with locks in our house is our bedroom and bathrooms. We knock on the kids doors, never been an issue!

Replace for no locks. None of our doors have locks

It's not a problem, really. I think they're both shocked to have locks so have been trying them out...just for the "new-ness" of it all. I haven't come down hard, just reiterated the rules, and they are complying. But, is there a point when they should have the freedom to lock their doors? Age 16? 17?

And, why would you replace the knobs?

Are you talking to the OP?

What are anyone's concerns with locks?

Do you really want to walk in on them jacking off?

Kids doing something parents don't approve of, I suppose. Are you really asking this b/c you don't know?

I'm asking because I trust my kids and I don't believe they're doing anything I would disapprove of so why should I insist on no locks?

What are YOUR kids doing outside your home that you're so worried about what they'd be doing under your roof?

We don't have any locks on any of the interior doors in our home, including the bathrooms. I didn't do it on purpose. I found some fanciful doorknobs and had them put in the solid oak doors I'd had installed without any regard to locks.

We knock and wait for a response. I'm glad that the kids are learning the lesson of privacy and the need to respect it, without it simply being a rule about locks.

This. The only time I locked a door was when masturbating.
