Future Western High School

Thanks, OP, for all the info!

When do you think this would happen?

If it pulls from Langley, what year might that happen?

What area of Great Falls would be impacted? Forrestville Elementary only or also GFES?

That HS isn't just about Chantilly or Centreville. And recall everything has a domino effect. You have to factor in Tysons Corner growth as well.

Suggest you check the enrollments of:
Herndon
Langley
McLean
Marshall
Falls Church

Then compare the enrollments of:
Chantilly
Centreville
Westfield

If you don't have the time, the difference from the top five listed compared to the bottom three is several hundred at minimum each. In a couple of the cases, the difference is seven hundred. Each.

I suggest you also look at what’s happening at ES and MS along with projected growth in the area.

According to the latest CIP, the construction would start in 2029.

I really don’t think GFES would be impacted. Forrestville is close to HHS and probably the only candidate in my opinion. Even then expect heavy political oppositions. Losing Forrestville means Langley High will have to take more kids from McLean boundary and that includes Tysons kids.

Also, the latest CIP states:

“The FY 2022-26 CIP continues to include the construction of a new high school in the western area of the county to provide capacity relief for high schools in the Centreville, Chantilly, Herndon, Oakton, South Lakes, and Westfield areas.”

See all those high schools I mentioned earlier are listed but McLean/Langley are missing? I know one of former board members mentioned that the new high school would impact Langley boundary but that’s far from a done deal in my opinion.

You seriously think that schools horsing those mentioned won’t be impacted? They will have to do a lot of rebalancing. By the time this school opens, half of the families won’t have HSers and a quarter to a thirdwill likely have moved to another area, out of state or out of country.

Starting to build in 2029?

So if my kids will graduate from Langley in 2032, 2033, 2034, should I worry about redistricting?

If you plan on staying in the same house until then, you may be affected. I don’t know how long a new build takes from approval to opening.

Also consider how close you are to your current zoned HS. We are walking distance to ours, so there’s no way the HS would change for our kids. It might affect their friends though.

If you’re on the edge of the pyramid boundary, you might see a change. Though people like Elaine Tholen wants to keep GF together, but since this is a county school system that may not make sense. Additionally, GF is an unincorporated area without defined boundaries. I mean, some people in Loudon Co. bordering on GF say they live in Great Falls. There is a rumor that some part of GF that was once part of the Herndon pyramid 30 years ago may land up in that pyramid again. Until a full study is done it is all speculation.

That’s more than a rumor. I had went to school with kids at Herndon High who lived on Seneca Road. I am still in touch with one.

The rumor is that it would revert back.

We can't possibly do more than guessing at this point.

They might redraw the elementary boundaries while they are at it.

They might both go, or one might be a split feeder.

New people move in all the time and some who grew up here may buy their parents houses. All of those people may have an opinion on school boundaries.

I've heard about this "western high school" for decades. I will be shocked beyond belief if it is ever actually built.
