Four days to school and my kids all have a cold

We've tested our kid twice for daycare, once to confirm that something was allergies and the other time because she has a stomach flu type illness and we needed a negative Covid test to send her back to school (and also so the daycare could be sure they didn't have an outbreak on their hands). Both times we were also happy to do it because I wanted to know! It's pretty easy to get a rapid test and while I'm not enthused about testing my kid constantly (it is very not fun for little kids, even the ones where they don't go deep in the nose), I certainly wouldn't resist getting one to put my own mind at ease, and to help the school keep track of what viruses might be circulating.

They don't want to know if it's COVID, because they want to pretend everything's fine and keep sending their kids to school.

People here are advocating keeping children home until they are symptom free. That’s going to be more than 3 days for many colds.

This is....not going to happen. I support testing a kid with symptoms and keeping them home for normal things like fever and vomit. But if a kid has a runny nose for more than 3 days but has tested negative? Ehhhh....

So, then everyone should sign the consent for covid testing. Schools should required testing for ALL symptomatic students and staff at the school by the school nurse for free. If a kid is symptomatic then they should get sent home until the test comes back. Then the school knows very clearly that the child has symptoms and the missed days should be excused until the test comes back.

Please remember that “stomach flu type illnesses” are extremely contagious as well and lead to outbreaks. Covid is not the only virus to be cautious about. Norovirus is way nastier in most kids and usually spreads to the entire family if brought home. Kids can be contagious for two weeks after symptoms subside. Please don’t think a negative Covid test should allow anyone to send a kid barely recovered from gastrointestinal symptoms back to a congregate setting.

Nope. I’m a PP who insisted OP get the Covid test, but i will not opt my kids in. I’m not having my kids sit on line for a nurses visit then in a room a variety of kids from all classes across the school were recently congregating in and where they need to take their masks off to do the test and with a nurse who had direct contact with hundreds of other kids’ bodily fluids. Just no, no, no. I am, however, religious about doing testing at any sign of symptoms and will continue to do that at home

Wow. If that is a true scenario - time to look for a better school.
