They want to apply to the handful they really want to go to, find some schools in the 25-30 that won't yield protect them, and then some safeties (their state school, less selective SLACs) - you can get to 10+ pretty quickly.

Especially if that kid has great scores and wants a SLAC. The odds are low, but not zero, so why not Apply to Carleton, Williams, Amherst, Middlebury, Heverford, Bowdoin, Swarthmore.... A kid happy at one will likely be happy at any. That kid will still need matches, so add anther 3 and safeties, so a few more

My DD is in this category. She has a long list of colleges she wants to apply to, but only decided the college for ED, rest are the same to her. When she told friends that she might apply to 15 colleges, many found it's too many.

DS probably looking to apply to 25 schools - marginal stats so casting a wide net. Half the schools have no application fee and none require anything above the Common App essay.

At most, 5.

DCUM's claim on the application number is like men's claim on the number of sex partners. You need to multiple that number by three.

DD is high stats and wants to apply for Ivies + Cambridge. I say she should count all Ivies as one school in terms of chances -- even though she is high stats, it's still a crap shoot at that level, right? She has some national awards and great ECs/grades/SATS but did not cure cancer, save a species, start a nonprofit, have legacy status or get recruited for athletics. So, she is looking at 13-17 schools depending on # of Ivies included. That sounds reasonable, no?

First timer here, so veteran parents, please weigh in.
