Where to apply with below average stats

University of AZ, Alabama, NC State, Rollins, Elon

Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania has a hospitality management program. I know a kid with low stats and the need for some supports who chose it after doing a lot of research and visits.

Rollins and Elon are getting more selective. If interested in warm places, Tampa (USF); southern, Belmont; yonder: U Iowa; UTah: Evergreen State.

^punctuation error. Utah; Evergreen

If cost isn't a factor OP, try one of the many smaller private colleges out there in VA and PA. They need full pay students and would probably be fine with the stats.

Mary Baldwin (which is now coed), Hampton Sydney, Randolph Macon, Roanoke College, all in VA.

In-state: St Mary’s College of Maryland, Frostburg, Salisbury
OOS: South Carolina, Eastern Carolina, High Point, Mary Washington, U of Tampa, U of Arizona, Missouri, Iowa State, Ohio U

Also, use Naviance to see where DC falls on the scattergrams for various schools.

Out of all of the colleges in Virginia, what made you choose Mary Washington as the college that a below average applicant should apply to? There are many colleges in Virginia that are easier to get into than Mary Washington

Radford has a 3.2 cutoff. What are your child’s grades OP?

Weighted or unweighted?

I don't think the 3.2 cutoff is accurate. Per the Common Data Set 44% of those admitted had a 3.24 or lower GPA (4.0 scale), including 27% with 2.99 or lower.

NP- My nephew had mediocre stats in high school and did a year in community college before transferring to his first choice school. If your ds is interested in a state flagship, this option should not be dismissed. The extra year at home also helped him develop more in terms of maturity.

Requirements to transfer to UMD

Students must participate in MTAP for a minimum of one semester before transferring to UMD and not matriculate to any other institution of higher education after MTAP acceptance.
Complete 30 college credit hours or earn an associate’s degree from an MTAP partner community college.
Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or a B average from all previous institutions attended.
Complete Fundamental Studies Academic English and Mathematics.
Please note: AP/IB credits or credits from another institution may count towards the fundamental English (only English Composition) and Math requirements. The original AP test scores must be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions from College Board and/or IB from International Baccalaureate.

My DD (class of 2019) was not a genius. 980 SAT and 3.5 GPA (not one honor). mcps school system. She was accepted to Towson in some kind of "freshman transition" program where she lives on campus the first semester and takes classes through the Community College of Baltimore, and seamlessly transfers to Towson assuming she gets a 3.0 or higher. This program is invitation only. She jumped at the chance, successfully transferred over. And for what it's worth she said the classes in CCBC were way harder than any class at Towson. Give Towson a try and thanks for posting about your average son. DCUM is shark infested waters sometimes.

This makes me feel better. DD had 3.25 from a private school and she had aspirations of attending a large public university. I was worried there were no schools for her.

She will be fine. I have one with that GPA and bombed ACT. Doing great at a Big10 school. Rushed, having a blast and getting good grades.

Many better options available to *gasp* someone with a 3.25.
Our DD with a similar GPA was admitted to JMU, VT, South Carolina, Delaware, Pittsburgh, Miami University, Indiana.
