Dropping a middle school B+

Instead they were transferred as As because A-plus isn’t given out in APS. But because it is in LCPS, that was enough to make her ranked like 6th in her class. I did the math at graduation when they announced the valedictorian’s GPA and realized that had those middle school grades transferred as an A-plus, my kid would have had the distinction.

Not that it ultimately matters. No one remembers these things a decade from now. But middle school grades do affect HS GPA.

In Llc’s, they have a very generous grading scale. Hard to complain…

That makes sense because for example APS does not give any weight to honors/intensified classes, only AP gets an additional quality point. Which I believe is different from other districts (and where I grew up).

It's quite common for colleges to recalculate. You should check their admissions websites.

Yes, many recalculate GPA, but not all. And some keep HS grades that were earned in MS classes as long as they are the primary academic classes (math/science/English/history/foreign language.)

Also as stated earlier, many if not most schools now, given the large volume of applications, have an automated initial screening process that is simplistic and numerical. For example, NYU got 100k last year, BU got 75k applications, UVA 48k, Tulane 45k, GWU & Georgetown each 27k. Your kid's prospects are in the hands of an algorithm, at least at first, not an admissions officer.

Yeah, an algorithm that won’t count middle school grades.

I'm telling you, as someone who looked into this for my kid, that is not true across the board. Some schools do recalculate, but some do not or do not exclude MS grades.

The post said "man" not "all," but the vast majority of the schools regularly discussed on this board do recalculate. I would not be shocked if some recalculate and include MS grades, but that goes counter to the underlying rationale for recalculating.

OP - how many foreign language credits will he have if he drops the French 2 grade?

My daughter considered this (B in Latin I) but she also decided not to take AP Latin (teacher is an ass) and the lack of 4 foreign language credits would be an issue when it came to college applications.

What school district is this that allows "dropping" a grade/credit? In FCPS you can expunge and retake HS classes taken in MS, but I was not aware you could "drop" grades beyond that.

Do it. And don’t tell your kid. Because it really isn’t a big deal. Is he going to pay attention to his transcript and his GPA to that extent? Mine doesn’t. I would take it off and not even think twice about it. What is dumb is that middle school grades are in a transcript to college and can drop your kids high school gpa. That is stupid.

Without French 2, they will have at least 4 years of French (1, 3,4,AP. Not sure if there will be anything to take senior year but maybe another AP or French 5?)

I definitely am not pursuing this without my son’s knowledge. We’ve already discussed it and he’s aware and keeping track.

My DS has is in a similar situation so I looked it up because I was curious. If you're in FCPS, it appears any dropping has to be done in the first 9 weeks of the following year.

This is crazy. Wow.

100%. What is the point of this post? Your child is perfect and will have zero issues getting acceptances at great schools. Leave this forum to us that have legitimate questions like my 3.3 student! Your 4.0 student is probably great so why are you worrying?

DP. This forum is for everyone. It's a legitimate question. I'm not sure why you think OP's child is "perfect" and will get into great schools. College admissions is super competitive these days, including for high stats kids. Love the kid you have and don't act bitterly to others who you view as having "perfect" kids--you have no clue!

If he drops the grade/credit he will still have 4 (maybe 5) years of French including one year of AP. Would it be weird that his transcript would be missing French 2? Would it be worth it for this one small GPA bump?
He’s a rising junior.

Since when can parents go in and adjust a kid's transcript? That's the strangest concept I've ever heard of. OP, you shock me. Let it go! Do you really think a (just) good grade in 8th grade French is going to sink your kid???

You can't expunge high school courses taken in high school. I think if schools are putting MS grades on HS transcript, students should have the option to remove them.

We are always sending messages to our kids.

Some parents just don't realize that.

The message OP is sending is if you're given an option to do something, fully consider it and decide what's best given your goals.

FCPS allows you to expunge and not retake.

Yes, with a passing grade, but according to the FCPS website: The request to remove a course from the transcript must be made in writing to the middle or high school that the student will attend the following year and prior to the end of the first nine weeks of the school year.

If the OP is in FCPS, they're no longer eligible for expunging the grade.

Drop the grades in MS if you want to maximize GPA. You definitely can drop MS grades (that were taken for HS credit) and my son is doing just that per the suggestion of college counselor in HS.
