Can’t find summer volunteer opportunities for rising senior

I noticed that this post was old, but I wonder if any new resources for this year? I have the same need. Thanks!

My 13-year-old volunteers for three different organizations locally. Your daughter is definitely not looking hard enough, OP.

The DD was trying to volunteer in Summer of 2021, a very different time than now. Try checking dates before responding in a snotty manner.

If you are in Fairfax, look at Volunteer Fairfax: www.volunteerfairfax.org

Our summer swim team gives out hours for helping with the little kids. Maybe try that?

A Wider Circle in Silver Spring is very organized and always looking for serious volunteers to do sorting of clothing and housewares. You can volunteer alone at age 14. It is a Very well respected organization in the community and volunteers are central to their mission of providing dignity items to those in need free of charge.

I’m on this mailing list still from when my son volunteered previously. They email frequently that they have volunteering needs with animals. https://www.luckydoganimalrescue.org/volunteer/volunteer

Comfort Cases in rockville takes teen volunteers. THe food banks, A Wider Circle and Interfaith Clothing Center are always looking for HS volunteers.

For those of you telling the kid to get a job or just clean up the park, that is not helpful. FYI hours of volunteer work with a registered non profit is a graduation requirement. The kids have to do it, even if they have a paid part time job or do other "helping" in the neighborhood.

For instance, when she searched Fairfax County’s teen volunteer list, out of the 100+ listed, they all say “no opportunities at this time” except for the ones that require swimming skills. The hospitals and libraries all still say no volunteers because of Covid. The three food banks she contacted said donations are so low now they aren’t taking new volunteers.

Please don’t write back that colleges don’t want to see volunteering started so late. We know - we just want her to do something useful and meaningful. She started looking in February.

Any ideas?

Look into Muslim and Hindu non-profits in your area, they accept everyone and would like some diversity.
