Low key travel softball in Nova?

10U does it some years - in my experience having more than 12 kids at that age is considered large and they often do. Not sure about any other age groups. And of course there are plenty of other organizations that carry more than 12 players at 10U regularly. McLean Magic carries huge rosters.

As the spouse of a coach on one of the teams on this thread, I can tell you that on any given weekend you can have one girl out sick, one with a family commitment and one with some other conflict. That puts you in a tournament with 9 girls to play. You need backups at pitcher and catcher at a minimum. Girls get injured, dehydrated, whatever. And not so many families in this space commit to being there in the way that they should. Our team carries 15 girls and we still had to play a tournament game in the fall with 8 on the field bc of homecoming, a holiday and family wedding and 1 illness. FWIW, we won!

So that’s the thing. For some teams, “family commitments” and “other conflicts” are excused absences. On some teams they are not. We have our tournament schedule well in advance. We carry 12 on an 16A team and the only excused absence is illness or injury but with an injury you still show up to support your team. If we are down below 10 with illness or injury, we get a guest player but that very rarely happens.
