Anyone else fascinated by NYC high society?

Anonymous
Nope.

I am not interested one bit in "the rich" or "society."

I am however interested in thinkers and achievers.

"High society" just does not apply to the USA, sorry. Please don't be shy - just say the rich.

Now, if you were to talk about Europe, you could say the aristocracy, and talk about salons, etc. Or if you were to talk about ancient Chinese civilizations or the Indian caste system, yes, there might be a "high society" there. But America?

Don't make me laugh, OP.

Are you always this pedantic?

Or so desperately faux sophisticated?

+1 your euro faded sophistication is even worse

I grew up with someone who married into NY high society. It sounds like living hell. Endless plastic surgery, derm procedures and working out to look like your body is a size 2 and your face is ironed wrinkle free. Her husband is rich and considered quite charming, flirts with everyone. She suspects he cheats. He has been involved in quite a few lawsuits on both ends. Total narcissist. No thanks.

Remember when tinsley was up there in nyc society with fabiola and the others? Now they wouldn’t even look in her direction!

On a separate note, is Marina Rust still married? How old are her daughters now -- are they in college?

From her Instagram, it appears they are still married and the oldest is at UVA

No, worst of all is that PP is boring. Nothing worse than being utterly dull.

Ok this made me look up marina Rust and wow that’s a new world of crass. The weird anti-Trump posts along side her postings of her clearly incredibly privileged lifestyle is a bit shocking and kind of hilarious. Like he’s crass and she isn’t with all her upper class signifying photos (you can’t buy into this Antiguan enclave, but I can! See what a happy place it is!!)? Isn’t the upper class supposed to be above flamboyant self promotion? Isn’t that considered crass? And the travel to homes on foreign islands during the pandemic? This seems insanely tone deaf. How did she get vaccinated before my doctor friends? How does she not get skewered by the Left??

Why would she do this?

I grew up in NYC and went to private school in the 80s. This movie is the only tv/movie that gets it right. Though, I don’t remember having any intellectual conversations while drinking in a ball gown in a Park Ave. apartment. We were usually playing quarters and plotting which bar or club to go to.

Agreed. This movie did get it right.

I'm in NYC and while I am in no way part of it, I know people who are. I think it's stifling. Like only able to live between 87 and 95 streets or what have you on the UES and only between 5 and Park -- one person was bemoaning the fact she couldn't find a place she wanted but only these blocks were acceptable. Vacationing only in certain places -- "out east". Working to get your kids into the "right" privates.
Such a limited lifestyle -- where's the exploration, looking for new and interesting?

If you think Marina Rust is crass, you will be beside yourself if you ever check out Marie-Chantal (of the famous Miller Sisters. Seriously - google them and especially during their heyday of the 1990s). Check out her Instagram.

I did not know that!

Also, did Marina Rust go to school around here? I've read that she grew up in DC (her father was curator of French Painting at National Gallery of Art).
