Wilson HS becoming August Wilson HS

This whole thread is a microcosm example of the limits of the far left liberal position on most things. It consistently ignoring the practical implications of policy decisions. And, at the same time refuse to consider the opinions of others who disagree.

Seems like this decision’s buttoned up. Perhaps those of you who have a lot of passion around this should advocate DCPS to name one of the new Ward 3 schools after Edna Jackson? Win win?

So, so true. They are as myopic as Trumpers on stuff like this. This is a good outcome - you lose the offensive name while preserving tangible resources that you can invest that might actually have outcomes aside from making everyone feel good. And agree with the PP - name one of the new schools Edna Jackson.

Disagreeing with an opinion is not the same as refusing to consider it. I disagree with the decision while seeing that there are monetary benefits to not having to change the name on everything. But I still think a thoughtful consideration of changing the name to someone who has a connection to DC outweighs the costs, especially since this isn't the type of thing that is done all the time,

such a lazy, cowardly decision.

How exactly is it "cowardly"?

You people are absurd.

Seriously. Is it even THAT expensive? Raise the property taxes of people in the neighborhoods with elementary schools zoned for Wilson by a few bucks a year and you'd cover the costs easily; call it a renaming surcharge.

It's cowardly because they don't want to deal with the backlash from alumni who don't ever want their school to change. beyond trying to save money, that is what they fear.

I see nothing wrong with saving money. Use that money to better fund PK and stuff.

so from here on out Wilson's story will go "yeah, it was named for our racist president but the city wanted to save money so it was "renamed" after some other guy named Wilson" So lame and kind of shameful backstory. Might as well of named is after Wilson the volleyball from Castaway. I would rather do that.

Ridiculous. They are changing the name and a tiny but vocal minority of alums are pissed off about it. The school does not have $ to spend on a massive rebranding effort so they did the best they could.

So sick of people being so cynical and always looking for the worst in every situation.

Then why spend months and months on this process only to settle on Wilson? Such a waste of everyone's time and energy. DCPS sucks and so does the mayor.
