Preppy colleges

Hmmm... I didn't know that not being a racist, sexist @sshole had a dress code. And -- many people llike me who wear polos and khakis are anti-racist and anti-@sshole.

Don't assume that because we dress alike I share your bigotry.

Agree re Vassar and Wes, but I thought B, B and C in Maine all seemed fairly NE prep.

While B, B and Colby all seem to have some NE prep to them, I can only really speak to Bates since that's where by DC attends. Bates feels a bit different to me - probably because of its location in Lewiston which is a lot grittier than Mayflower Hill and Brunswick. This doesn't bother my DC because he comes from a grittier area too. Bates didn't feel "preppy" to me during our visits, but my DC has on occasion mentioned the number of his friends that went to boarding school. DC is a public school kid and unphased by any preppiness that does exist. As to clothing choices - it seems to be more outdoorsy than preppy.

Pardon me, but I fail to see where I made a bigoted statement. I also didn't state anything about any current dress code. It just seems that prep school graduates seem happy to revel in their faux woke horseshit.

Preppy, like vineyard vines, southern comfort, lilly pulitzer, khakis and polos?

People see that now and assume privilege and racism.

College kids on every campus are in sweats, jeans, and cropped tanks.

Dartmouth, Princeton, Williams, Georgetown, Trinity, Yale (outside of English/X Studies majors)

Southern preppy:

Duke, Washington & Lee, Southern Methodist, University of Richmond, Wake Forest, UVA, UNC, etc.

New England preppy generally meant the students actually come from prep schools in the northeast.

Southern preppy, the students may come from wealthy suburban publics/privates/parochial schools (there really are no top prep schools in the south) but dress in pastels. Generally the social life at Southern preppy schools tend to revolve around Greek Life, while many preppy NE schools don't even have Greek Life.

Sounds like “Southern preppy” is fake preppy.

I usually try not to derail threads, but this one seems fair game, so . . . how are you defining "top"? There are certainly boarding schools south of the Mason-Dixon line that cost a lot of money and provide a sufficiently sound education that some of their students will get into top LACs and universities.

Southern preppy (ie Alabama) and New England preppy (ie Colgate) are not exactly the same thing. A kid comfortable with one will not necessarily be comfortable with the other

This is spot on. I went to Auburn and my husband went to Colgate — very different interpretations of preppy!

Texas has a place for prep, but the overall campus isn't that preppy

There's the standard popped collar polo shirt and boat shoes (from the old Preppy Handbook), which would include Bowdoin and Colby, but then there is the more "boho" prep (a little shabbier and outdoorsier in style, a little more weed and a bit less gin and tonic) and that would be Bates and Wesleyan, and possibly Vassar too but I'm not quite as sure.

Bowdoin and bates, generally quite preppy.

Vassar and Wesleyan have vibes that are wayyy more artsy and edgy,

NESCACs generally trend quite preppy.

Among the less preppy/more edgy/artsy
- Bennington
- Sarah Lawrence
- Vassar
- Wesleyan
- Bard

Well, that is ignorant. You'd think college kids were smarter than to judge a book by its cover (and so harshly too).

There is also Midwestern preppy, which is a bit copy cat, a bit midwestern "nice," conservative-dress style. Miami of Ohio, Notre Dame, etc.
