Serious question. Can anything substantial really be done about this short of bussing kids crazy long distances? Personally I'm not in favor of kids spending a lot of time on busses.

I should clarify I think the real issue is Arlington housing policy and the concentration of higher density housing in South Arlington. Schools have to deal with the fall out, but I feel the county housing policies are to blame for the socio economic imbalance, not the school district.

I agree and so we should use the county's public lands to balance it out. Let's make Lubber Run's new center a school. It's closer to s. arl, an easy trip and can be a county-wide program. It's already got a playground! playspace! Outdoor gathering space! outdoor biology lab! parking for a county-wide program. Do I have an amen?

Are you talking about the Lubber Run community center? It's across the street from Barret ES. I don't see how that helps.

Which choice schools could be moved? Montessori was moved out of Drew within the last couple of years (maybe 3). Key and ATS were just moved. Moving Claremont out of South Arlington is nonsensical. Campbell uses the nature center it is next to for its EL program.

neither Key or ATS has moved. So move Key = only 1 move. Saves money.

and there's pickleball courts! We could raise little pickeball bi-lingual champions. What if we make it an olympic sport? That's a great hook for college applications.

3rd immersion school They are looking to reduce the number of kinder classes at Claremont and Key from 6 to 4 because the schools are so overcrowded. But that means nearly 100 or so kids that are normally accepted in immersion won't be next year. Make a 3rd immersion.

Pretty sure they want to put any new immersion program in an area with a high Spanish speaking population. I'm guessing they are eyeing up Campbell, Carlin Springs, and Barcroft for that.

They need capacity on the west end of columbia pike though- They are not going to move a school to Lubber Run, but if they did, it would be Campbell.

That actually would make a lot of sense since Campbell could then access Lubber Run park to support their outdoor education program. But, agree the county is never letting them put a school there.
