Those groups don’t always last and often can’t sustain interest or financial

LOL - the neighbors of Hearst Park only started paying attention to the park when the city proposed to improve it which will bring more people to their corner of CP.

That park has long been in poor shape with lots of litter and vines overtaking trees in the buffer between the soccer field and 37th Street and I mention those last two things because if the neighbors had cared all of these years they could have taken care of those things themselves. The tennis courts were also in poor shape and rarely swept (though they were also rarely used).

But of course people in CP don't do yard work or pick up trash.

I suspect the neighbors would prefer for the park to deteriorate (which is likely since DC is just terrible about maintaining anything it is responsible for) so they have cause to argue the pool should be closed which would get rid of anyone from outside of the neighborhood using their park.

I don't live at the park, but I am not sure what you are talking about. If you have been following Hearst Park or CP for the last 20 years, the water issue with that park has been a constant fight with the city. Just check out Youtube. There are dozens of videos of neighbors houses being flooded out because of the weird water situation at that park.

The swampy soccer field has been a constant source of complaints. The mosquitos there are legendary.

Anyway, it sounds like you simply want to chime in on something that you only know about anecdotally.

PP sounds envious as well, and would like to live next to Hearst Park?

If you follow the project updates DC DGS seems to have just this month slid the opening of the complex from Spring 2021 to summer 2021.

PROJECT TIMELINE:
• Design and Outreach: May 2016
• Construction Begins: August 2019
• Phase I of Playground: Fall 2019
• Phase II of Playground: Spring 2020
• Project Completion of the Field and Park: Spring
2021 and will open in late Spring 2021
• Project Completion of the Pool and Poolhouse:
Summer 2021

A pandemic with corresponding supply chain delays, will do that. The pool would have been completed long before the pandemic had the NIMBYs not delayed things.

Sorry but I have very little hope for maintenance of the pool and field. As all of our kids know the brand new playground which was completed in spring of 2020 according to the timeline above has had a broken slide on it for a year. It has a piece of plywood bolted over it to prevent kids from climbing it which the kids just go up the opposite way and risk their legs and butts on the same two jagged holes that the plywood is supposed to prevent their exposure to.

So, I have very little faith that the pool will be operated for very long on a field that is still having water pumped out from underneath of it. Hopefully the ground water that is being pumped out does not cause any erosion of the land beneath the complex. But I guess water is not known for shaping land.

Website has not been updated since the March update. It still says that the pool is scheduled to be open this summer. Field is scheduled to open this spring (late).

I think that there is a little dog run being built immediately adjacent to the Hearst Park complex. The field itself is a "no dogs" field. I am sure that the neighborhood pet owners will respect delineations. Certainly as they already are worried about park maintenance.

They had cement trucks there this morning. It actually looks like they are finally making progress after two yess as es of construction.
