| No subs is difficult but there just aren’t enough subs who are trained in the technology or given canvas access to be able to run random classes. Teachers are still permitted to take sick or personal leave. Regardless of how you may feel about a teacher talk a trip (I do not feel comfortable traveling right now and wouldn’t be caught dead at Disney), if the teacher is using personal days there is nothing illegal about it and your anger is misplaced. Why would the teacher be disciplined for following APS guidelines to leave asynchronous work as directed by APS? |
At the elementary level, if there aren't subs available, I think they should just double up classes when a teacher is out. Have another teacher in the same grade instruct two classes at once. Kids in K-2 aren't mature enough to manage asynchronous on their own. A big class is better than no class. |
This is the reason why. The teacher would have to add the name of the sub (who they don't even know and do not arrange for themselves) to their canvas course, and the sub would have to know how to use Canvas and MS teams competently. These things aren't happening this year. |
Seems like a school principal or AP could step in. |
| Our es teacher in APS did 3 days from ski resort. Taught till almost lunch (11:30) then rest of days were asynchronous. After the first day we just skipped next 2 as it was total waste. |
My FCPS kid has had this happen twice this year. It's worked out fine, certainly better than asynchronous would. |
I mean it is fine- if she took the days off and was instructed by admin to post work while out then why in the world would she get disciplined or fired? I know nothing of this teacher or situation personally- maybe she's being a huge hypocrite and wants school virtual or maybe she's been wanting to go back in person since August. I also wouldn't personally be going on vacation right now but plenty of people are. But someone said this teacher should get fired and unless there is more to it- like the teacher lied to admin about the absences (which seems unlikely since she's broadcasting the fact that she's on vacation) then I'm not sure why people are calling for her job. |
And THIS is yet another reason why DL isn't working!! |
It sounds like she didn't even take leave for her vacation, which is taking advantage of the system. Report this!!! Teachers can skip school to run errands, go skiing, have fun trips to Disney while our kids suffer. This is NOT OK. I'm so furious. |
|
Let's all try to share stories like this with Duran. NOT in an effort to get any teachers fired. But to show him that everyone has their own level of risk they are willing to take, whether to see family, take a vacation, or get back in the classroom.

The OP’s story or the Disney story? |
This. 30 minutes small group interaction with teacher > 2 hours large group interaction |
I’m a teacher and there is no excuse for a teacher losing track of time and not logging in. In a normal year the sub shortage is real and a lot of subs are really terrible. We keep a “do not call” list of the worst and ask to not have them in our classes. Many subs don’t follow sub plans and the subs themselves on playing on their phones all class. Many high schoolers can definitely tell you how they sat with a sub and could do whatever they wanted for a class. A few students would use this time as a study hall. I was sick one day this year and put up asynchronous work because there are not any virtual subs. |
| Expect to see a LOT of asynchronous work the second half of February, when teachers are *hopefully* getting their second vaccine shots. The booster is supposed to have higher chances of negative side effects for a day or so, and many teachers may take a sick day. |
Both.. Plus the ski resort story plus others that are popping up. |
