how much does it matter if your kids' names sound good together

My DH is from a big family and while their names do sound like a family now to me i still notice how dissimilar some of the names are (think Elizabeth and Jennifer).

I think a solid percentage of families with 3+ daughters in the 70s/80s had both of these names. It's weird to me that they strike you as dissimilar - they're both top 10 (maybe 20) names from the decade these people were likely born.

Only when is way off do I think anyone notices. Like in a childhood friend’s family where the four siblings were named: Damali, Sharifa, Rashad, Hasani, and ... Todd.

In college I dated a guy whose parents immigrated from Iran before he was born. He and his brother both had very Persian names that really stood out amongst all the "Mikes" and "Jasons." When they were in their early teens their parents had another baby boy and let them (the brothers) choose the name. They chose Sean! Definitely did not "go" with his two older brothers names, but his parents honored their choice and named the baby Sean.

Pretty important.

I don’t want matching names but I want them to flow well together.

I’m bothered by families where they’ll have kids names like Catherine, George, Arthur and Rain.

Like, pick a theme.

See, I’d think Elizabeth is sisters with Catherine and Margaret. And Jennifer is sisters with Tracy and Amanda.

My older daughter has a name with Greek origins. We really loved names like that but ended up naming our 2nd a more English name (think Lydia and Catherine). They don’t go together in my opinion and I’m occasionally aware of that, but also like their names enough that I’m okay with it.

I say them together a lot, but eve if you don't think they go together now, they WILL go together once you start saying them together a lot.
