Perhaps now we can put to rest the notion that he's a viable candidate for anything. After getting clobbered by Mendo two years ago, his best hope was to sneak in thanks to a crowded field, and he flopped.

Lazere's utter failure -- I saw he barely drew 5 percent of the vote in Wards 7/8 -- should serve as a warning sign to Charles Allen, who clearly has his eyes on the mayor's job. Given the choice, a sizable bulk of DC is going to vote for literally anyone (Vincent Orange!) over a white male, no matter how liberal he is.

Lazere's failure also illustrates the chasm in DC between the traditional Black Democratic core of voters -- who think "defund the police" is a bad idea and don't particularly care if bike lanes are ever built in their neighborhoods -- and the ultra-left White population that is loud on Twitter but simply still not an electoral force in DC, at least not as big as a force as they would lead you to believe.
What signs do you see that make you think Allen is interested in running for mayor? I'm in Ward 6 and I don't see it, but fill us in on what I missed.

DP. I mean why else is he in politics? He seems pretty personalityless. I think he’s an entitled white guy who just wants to feel important.

Haha, pp here. So you've decided he must want to run for mayor because he's a white guy without personality? That's hilarious. No, I'm really impressed with Charles's work. (And with his personality, by the way.) I think it would be a mistake for him to run for mayor and that's why I wanted to know why that one poster is sure he is angling to run.

what work has he done?
Don't have time to get into specifics but my neighborhood is a gentrifying neighborhood populated both by well-to-do professionals and people who live in public housing. I notice that Charles tries to addresse the concerns of a range of people, both the new and old residents. No, he's not perfect but I find him hitting all the right notes. So, that is not enough detail for you, I'm sure, pp, but that's all that I have time to give you right now.

that just sounds like pointless triangulation.

get back to me when he proposes legislation to help get kids back to school.

PP, politician's aren't in charge, the virus is.

it’s literally politicians’ job to ensure essential public services like schools happen, and to deal with events like pandemics.

I agree- I think he means well but I think it is really hard for a 60-ish year old white man to effectively represent DC constituents city-wide, especially if running on a progressive agenda.

Why do you say that? I don't think he's 60 yet, but a white guy who's been in the city for 40 years, married to a black woman with 2 black sons.

People should listen.

+1, another black ward 4 voter. It seems the first choice of the mayor (my neighbor) would've been Goodwin, but I'm not a supporter. I thought Lazere seemed like a decent, smart candidate. He lives in Brookland, right? And I believe his kids attended DCPS.

Think Nadeau will bless us with another do nothing term?

She's well on her way to her second straight term doing nothing. I really hope she has one strong opponent in the 2022 primary and not two weak ones like last time. She'd struggle in any debate against a marginally competent opponent, and her record on a number of subjects is dismal (she's done next to nothing about skyrocketing crime in her ward except repeatedly insist violence interrupters are the answer, and there are no violence interrupters working in her ward).

The people of DC have now declined to listen in two separate elections. If that's not sending a message to him then I don't know what is. It's almost absurdly obvious now that Lazere has no chance of winning a citywide election.

Maybe he would have better luck trying to take down the incumbent in his own ward, though I kind of doubt it.

Word on the block is Mendo wants to be Mayor and may run in 2022 if Bowser is still around

Out of all the council members who are eyeing a run -- and I'm guessing Allen, Robert White, maybe Silverman, maybe Janeese (only if Racine doesn't run, but he might be Biden's AG) -- Mendo seems the least likely to even *want* to run. He seems perfectly content where he is.

If Bowser doesn't run again, it's going to be a crowded field in the primary, much like the at-large race. If she does, it'll be less so. I guarantee she won't run unopposed like last time, though. She's extremely vulnerable now. People are sick of her incompetence.

Lazere has been in DC for 25 not 40 years.

He has also been illegally (admittedly) lobbying the council for years.

Also, everyone calls him a "Budget Guru" but the man never says anything specific. Our local press corps basically lives inside the colons of the council. Can you imaagine what would've happened if a conservative said the problem with DC is "Moderate Blacks" like Silverman did?

Yuck. That guy is awful.

Word on the block is wrong.

The politico that bleeds to be mayor is Robert White.

The only problem is that he’s the male version of Muriel.

DC is in a weird spot right now. The traditional biggest voting block -- black voters EOTR and in Ward 5 -- is undeniably more conservative than the white voters that put Janeese and her ilk into office. These voters rejected Ed Lazere pretty thoroughly. They will line up behind Bowser if she runs again. They also will reject Allen, who is *dying* to be mayor.

Ed was in my grad school class almost 30 years ago. He’d been in DC years before that.

“Ed and his wife Suzanne have lived in Ward 5 for nearly 30 years.
They have two sons, Adam and David.”

That’s from Ed’s website.

It’s over.
