Washington vs D.C.

EOTR...give me a break.

Like Hill South. NoMA. and all the other weird names around here.

It's SE. Dassit.

The District = what we call it

Downtown = the portion of NW that encompasses federal buildings/the mall/K street. I disagree with the person above who said it’s most of NW; it’s not. Adams Morgan is not downtown. Dupont is not downtown. Georgetown is not downtown.

As an aside, I feel like people from outside the DMV care more about what’s inside the Beltway and what isn’t. I’ve lived in this area for 15 years and never really think about it.

^Nope.

Outside of this area, most people question "DC or Washington state?" whenever I have just said Washington.

Which in reality is UPTOWN.

Sorry that doesn't work either. It's a bunch of NE too. And not all of SE either.

To PP who asked why I don't just use my neighborhood name- obviously because there are neighborhoods not every resident has heard of. For my entire life living in DC I have ALWAYS heard it referred to as East of the River. It is not a new term. The only slightly new thing is shortening it to "EOTR"

That’s a helpful response. Thanks for your contribution.

The acronym was my confusion. That’s what seemed very new dc to me.

I have lived here almost all my life. I always say DC. If you say Washington then people think of the state not the district.

Yes to most of this. When I talk to people from here I say The District or the DMV (depending). If I'm out of town I say DC or Washington DC.

Being inside/outside of the Beltway used to be a much bigger deal 25-30 years ago. Of course back then driving to Dulles from downtown used to feel like you were going to the moon and now it is just a regular drive. When I was a kid and living in Fairfax County, the White Flint Mall opened. My mom packed us girls into the car and told my dad that we would be gone for the day because we were going all the way to Rockville.

I grew up in Bethesda and everyone, regardless of color, called it DC.

4th gen here--not going to debate someone who has only been here for 15 years. Most of the labels here are new and not traditional terms for natives.

I guess I’m WOTR adjacent. Adjusting my letterhead and library card.

The acronyms ( minus DC) seem very just moved here. I really had no idea.

Interesting. Do you have many friends or colleagues who are white, live in DC and call it Washington? I’m white and call it DC and so do basically all the people I know in the district. I assume anyone calling it Washington is either not from here or speaking specifically about the politicians.
