Big State Schools for CS

Campus crime reports were a huge turnoff for me as a parent.

Big four in CS: MIT, CMU, UCB and Stanford

A generation ago (when cs meant pre software engineer) then yes. Now it’s all about AI and internet scale systems. I would replace CMu with Princeton.

CMU-CS Avg. Input: 1570 SAT, Avg. Output: $140K.

Name a school that is higher for either.

Citation? None of those are separate application schools. Where are you getting SAT/Salary info?

PP's info. is likely lower for the SAT. I can't find the average but the mid 50% range for SCS is 750-800 and 790-800 for ERWS and Math respectively. Avg would be 785.

Salary info. CS Avg salary is $118K (2018), not $140 - https://datastudio.google.com/reporting/1s3hqhw783Nli7lCvlW-ZR5oNe3pISRVS/page/3MhHB

I have never heard of Princeton bests CMU in any CS discipline. The Big Four is a recent recognition, not a generation-ago thing.

https://ai.cs.cmu.edu/faculty-listing
"CMU AI unites nearly 200 faculty members working in areas that range from art to public policy — all in topics that relate to or impact artificial intelligence."

https://aiml.cs.princeton.edu
Princeton lists 13 faculties ranging from NLP to robotics. CMU has a separate Language Technology Institute,

, and a Robotics Institute,

I too have never heard of Princeton as a program to mention specifically, notwithstanding of course some brilliant individuals in which every program will have some.

The big 4 is uncontested with CMU at the top, particularly in AI/ML. Their department is larger than any other as well.

The “Next 4” is closely behind too, trading places among Cornell, UIUC, GT and UDub.

Throw in CalTech and Waterloo and there you have it, top 10 in North America.

Their department is larger because CMU is almost acting as an ffrdc in this area.

Stop quoting SAT scores. You are sampling on the dependent variable.

I've not seen Waterloo ranked in the top 10 on any list.. Can you share some data points?

University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign Very strong in Comp Sci

As an old timer, I keep UIUC number 5, but I can't argue with your analysis.

Getting back to OP's question, http://csrankings.org/#/index?all is not a bad place to poke around. Especially if DC has a preference for one type (Embedded vs. Databases) of CS and wants to drill down into research activity.

Agreed. I'm a UIUC alum and many of my friends were CS majors and doing very well now. Most had multiple high-paying job offers before they graduated, as they were heavily recruited by a number of companies. UIUC is about as traditional of a "big state school" as you get, with all the pros and cons that come with it. Lots of resources, research opportunities, weekend football games, large Greek system, huge gen ed classes, and always tons going on.

Duke claims Cody Ko and his friends, a bunch CS grads who started Cameo. My senior is a big fan and plays video games with a couple of them.
