My dog who is very sweet and gentle will occasionally growl or even do a little “fake snap” (he just taps his teeth together very softly) when he does not want to be disturbed.
He is not aggressive nor has he ever come close to biting anyone. My children know his boundaries and to respect him if he growls - for example, if he has settled on my bed for the night and he does not want to be picked up. My friend’s kids have been growled at when they failed to pay attention to his signals and kept trying to play with him. Kids need to be taught proper behavior and respect.
