Moving to DC and VERY concerned about preschool

I'm pretty sure all in-bounds pre-K kids got seats at Lafayette this year, and all but maybe one or two at Janney.

This is simply inaccurrate. A large portion of in-bound pre-k in Janney did not get in last year. There were in bound kids with waiting list numbers in the 80s. Most did not get offered spots. I don't know where your getting this information but it isn't right.

Right, because there were more than 120 pre-K kids in AU Park this year. Gibberish.

The initial lottery results are available on the DCPS site (follow the "Download the results of last year's lottery" link from http://dcps.dc.gov/DCPS/oob#12 ). 64 in-boundary kids applied for pre-K at Janney; 40 got in and 24 were initially waitlisted (with waitlist numbers 1-24). The vast majority of those waitlisted in-boundary kids, if not all of them, were ultimately offered seats.

14:33 is correct and I can only wonder what crawled up 17:08's butt and died. Do you work for Michelle Rhee??

There are families who are inbounds for Lafayette and did NOT get in, and we weren't the only ones! Don't try to tell me the reality here!

New poster here.

i'm confused. 17:08 posted the actual stats. Why the animosity? 64 in boundary kids applied. 40 initially got in. 24 were initially wait-listed. It's reasonable to think that a number of these 24 later got in (I personally know 2). 14:33's doomsday post about in-boundary wait list of 80+ kids is simply not accurate.

Another new poster. I suspect that what may have happened is in-boundary families missed the lottery for whatever reason and then later had to add their kids to the end of the waitlist. That would make it possible for everyone to be mostly correct: All (or almost all) in-boundary families who participated in the lottery got in (eventually), but in-boundary families who missed the lottery were shut out.

Fellow future NY to DC transplant here. I was wondering what programs you found for your 2yo.

Did you pick a neighborhood yet? Would you mind sharing some of your research for 2 year olds?

DH will be working in bethesda but we are open to other neighborhoods as well. I am completely and utterly overwhelmed with all the preschools and neighborhoods in the DC area! It's still undecided if I will be a stay at home mom or working but if I did work, I'm sure it would be in DC as I work in finance in NYC now.

It's nice to know so many people can afford to live in the areas PP suggested, be at stay at home mom and still pay for preschool.

We can't afford to live in those areas with 2 kids, live in the suburbs but are happy.

I suggest you come down to DC and check out the area first. Good luck with the move!
