Should I give up on DL and move my kids to New Zealand for a year?

Oh my god. If I could move to New Zealand I would do it in a heartbeat! Go, if they will take you! But quarantine for fourteen days before and after! Don’t be the jerk who spreads covid to NZ

If my husband was a NZ citizen I would have moved a month ago.

DH is a New Zealander. School is in-person there.

Feeling very tempted to move our kids there for the year. DH would semi-retire, maybe work part-time. I would need to stay in the US because of my job, but would probably take a long vacation around Christmas to spend time with them while they're on holidays.

I worry though about what they would lose because the school years don't line up and the order of math and other subjects may be different there. Plus they would lose a lot of US history and social studies.
On the other hand, seems like it could be a fantastic, mind-expanding experience for them to spend a year abroad.

Thoughts?

Absolutely not. Have your DH semi-retire here and help them with DL and other activities to make it a better experience for them. In-person school is not worth having your Mom around for an entire year, especially when you’re navigating a brand new country and educational system.

I would go with DH and the kids, if they would allow me to do so. I would not move anyone and plan to visit, because you might not be able to travel.

Friends moved back after the election and the government there really has it together.

Yes I would go, in a heartbeat.

But OP can’t go. She’s proposing her DH and kids go while she remains in the U.S.

OP can go but she is choosing not to go. She can quit her job or take a leave

Are the kids citizens?
Be prepared to not be let in as a US citizen.

Also if things get worse I wouldn’t assume you would be allowed into the country at Christmas and if you were they will require you to spend 14 days alone quarantined in a hotel.

Right, we'd need to spend the first two weeks in quarantine, but that doesn't seem like a huge deal.

You are confusing me now as I read this like your spouse would take the kids and you would stay behind and visit at Christmas.

In that scenario you are in an Auckland hotel alone for two weeks upon landing, including Christmas Day.

To their own citizens? Doubt it.

Yes, op, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Before they leave I’d have set dates for your visits to help everyone with the change.

At that point a year after pandemic? They will say sorry not sorry, why the F did you leave

Say hi to Peter Thien for me and give him a rude gesture for supporting Trump then fleeing the mess he made.

Also--US history has not been taught in the US since the 1990's so they would not be missing anything.

What school do your kids go to that doesn’t teach US history??

Sure they’re making a stupid political comment
