Are your kids doing specials?

We submitted art work, but never got any comment from the teacher, so I am not sure my kids will keep doing it... Losing motivation.

No

Assignments only, usually not on time.

Putting up random videos from youtube is not PE. How difficult is it for a PE teacher to contact each child in their school at least once these past 10 weeks?

I conduct live classes every week, with no more than 30% participation. I asked students to record themselves singing
(we practiced during class) and share it. Still waiting. Some parents are writing to me and saying it’s too overwhelming to coordinate multiple Zoom meetings and assignments for their elementary level children.

no. they do core subject matter, play, build, art while we work in the afternoons and nights. I hate this and am getting very little sleep - doing schooling in from 7am-12 noon and office work at home from 12 noon- 6pm and again 8-11pm.

Hang in there.

So no

My 6th grader was asked to do a simple multiplication problem once so we've never done math again.

Im sorry but this is sadly funny.

Of course. Why would you give your child the impression that the arts or physical activity is not important?
Art and physical activity is important, but doing it via online isn’t. My kid is doing plenty of physical activity and arts/crafts.

So weird that people are actively discouraging their children from participating in online learning and then turning around and saying online learning doesn't work.

My kids are learning on a much more indepth level now because we are aware of their curriculum and are actively engaging with them. Children in public schools get very little (if any) personalized feedback. Here's your chance to be involved. Stop whining and take it.

Agree! And saying doing it online isn't important? Would you say "Math is important, but doing math online isn't." Either the arts are important or they aren't

Online learning should not be directly related to how active the parent can engage. Parents are still working out of the house (my and my dh) trying to find caretakers, working from home and trying to keep their jobs. They are doing their best.

No, we're not. If I wanted my kids to be stuck with even more asynchronous videos (which I super don't, whether they feature the teacher or are reposted from Youtube) there are other things out there we could use instead that were not produced under corona conditions and are better thought out. We're focusing on core academics and trying desperately to get real exercise. If specials were taught live on a real and regular schedule and were not makeshift we'd probably participate.

Agree. My middle school child has substantial and interesting assignments in three different "specials." I've helped out with a few and have even changed up my whole own exercise routine based on the PE lessons.

She's had an online field day, her PE teacher started an online juggling club, she's had lunch bunches with drawing time with her art teacher, she's had modules to complete for music where she's made musical instruments and then been able to open mystery modules where she can make more music and upload. The specials teachers have been very active and engaged and creative and present.

I only named a few things, and the instrumental music teacher has been posting things as well.

Same here - in a nearby downcounty MCPS school.

My child has been participating in music. He is enjoying it. Once a week - 30 minutes. He looked at the art teacher stuff, but he’s never been into art. He looked at his classmates work and enjoyed seeing their stuff.

I have seen nothing PE.

Are they getting a completion grade on their report card for specials in MCPS?

I was told yes when I asked at a PTA meeting. So my child has been doing them all. Specials are every other week. Some were actually fun.
