Is Phi Beta Kappa worth it?

Congrats to your daughter. This is a win-win. It's legit, makes no demands on your time, and looks great on a resume!

It is legit, and meaningful to those in the known.

Congratulations to your DC!

I am a member and so is my husband. We both bought the keys.

Phi Beta Kappa induction was a matter of great personal pride for me. It symbolizes my commitment to the liberal arts. I still look at my key occasionally and it will be something I keep with me for life. My grandfather was also extremely proud of this honor since he was from an era where people wore these things openly and he was an inductee of the comparable engineering society.

I receive the Phi Beta Kappa newsletter and read it. Occasionally I have found book reviews in there that have interested me. Once I found an essay about the purpose of education that touched me and I kept it with my papers. The motto speaks to me; "Love of wisdom (learning) is the guide of life."

I do not put it on my resume because the circles in which I move would not recognize it and would probably inaccurately conclude I was in a sorority.

TL;DR - I earned Phi Beta Kappa, it matters to me, and it's not career relevant for me.

I also signed up for Golden Key in undergrad. That was a waste of $. I therefore did not sign up for a business honorary in MBA school. The net result was that I did not get fancy cords to wear at MBA graduation. That was a bit annoying because I was at the summa level but they only gave cords to the people in the honor society.

It's the highest academic honor. I have a key from William and Mary which is where Phi Beta Kappa was founded. I take pride in that achievement for sure.
