The risk isn’t just about you and your kids. Your kids could spread it to their teachers or other staff members who could take it home to their own families and kids. Childcare workers are almost always either mothers themselves, older women who have left other professions, or lower income earners. Their pay and benefits are minimal and their risk is high. |
Our daughter is still going to her school, as we are both essential workers. They are taking a huge number of precautions. We will not have a problem continuing to send her as more kids come back to school. |
Well at some point their pay and benefits will be zero, because I will need to find alternative childcare and will stop sending in tuition. The current situation is not tenable until there is a vaccine. There will be some level of risk associated with reopening and staff will need to devise whether they want to accept it. Just like many of us will need to decide whether to go back to cubicles. I agree with the PP that Hogan has done a pretty good job so far. If/when he reopens the daycares, we will likely take our kids back. |
Just curious, but how many kids are currently attending? I wonder if the teachers will manage to keep up with the safety measures with a full roster of kids. |
Can you be more specific about the precautions? |
My daycare added new sanitizing equipment, including something called the Zono sanitizing cabinet. Their message is excerpted below:
Eco-Friendly Sanitizing Technology Over the next two weeks, state-of-the-art sanitizing technology will be installed at all 15 of our facilities. This upgrade makes ****** one of a few national centers, and the only center locally, to have this technology. The ZONO Sanitizing Cabinet is an eco-friendly sanitizing system that kills 99.9% of common bacteria and viruses including one of the hardest to kill, Norovirus. It is expected that ZONO will be effective in killing Covid-19, however this claim cannot be made until independent testing is conducted. ZONO uses no harsh chemicals to sanitize hard and soft items like blocks, dress-up clothing, dolls, nap cots and more. Instead, it uses ozone created from ambient air, water and electricity to sanitize porous, semi-porous, and nonporous surfaces. With the ZONO, sanitization takes only 30 minutes, so items can be sanitized throughout the day. Additional Disinfecting Equipment We have also purchased additional ozone generating equipment and electrostatic handheld sprayers to sanitize and disinfect entire classrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, offices and hallways on a regular basis. This new technology will be used in conjunction with our existing health and safety practices and equipment— like our commercial duty HVAC systems that utilize ultraviolet light in the ductwork to kill both airborne and surface bacteria, contaminants and viruses. |
Since most current data is showing that people are infecting each other directly instead of surface contamination, how is your center addressing that? Are staff or students wearing masks? Is there any expectation of distancing? |
I am on my daycare’s ‘covid committee.’ We had a meeting yesterday and our director asked if anyone would NOT send their kids if the daycare were to reopen in accordance with state rules (ie when the state says they can allow nonessential kids back). Every parent said yes, eagerly. |
I'm confused. Are you saying that you all said you wouldn't send your kids back in? |
Wrote this wrong. She asked if we would send our kids back, not if we wouldn’t. Everyone will send them back when we can. |
what is your committee’s stance on the safety of high risk teachers? |
When we have evidence to allow me to make a data driven decision about my family's risk and the risk to our teachers.
Any predictions about when that will be? |
Same! |
DP. Seems like this would be a good case for expanding access to short/long term disability. I don’t think it makes sense to keep daycares shut down until everyone is vaccinated solely to protect high risk teachers. Partly because it punishes the teachers who need an income and are willing to work. A lot of daycares are still charging tuition or raising donation to pay staff but this will not continue indefinitely. |
That doesn’t make any sense. Disability isn’t preventative. You can’t collect disability to prevent getting sick. |
