+1 if you watch a YouTube video it’s pretty clear. Which we had to do. Less room for error when you do not enter in every step. |
I think either the teacher spoke poorly or you misconstrued what they said. I like mathspace because it will not allow a kid to continue down the wrong path. If they drop a negative in step 2, it marks step 2 as wrong rather than allowing them to continue on and marking the final answer as wrong. A student can bypass that and just put in x=5 at the end (which is fine if they get it right the first time) but then they miss out on the partial feedback along the way if they get it wrong. My students personally hate it because it holds them accountable. They can't copy/paste from a solving website anymore, they actually have to think through steps if they aren't correct the first time, and they can't submit things wrong and get full credit. I love it for all the same reasons. |
+1 And re: the bolded, they must have changed this due to the amount of complaints - five years ago, it absolutely would NOT take equivalent equations. The inputted steps and answer had to correlate *exactly* to the MathSpace version. It was a complete mess. |
Exactly. Which is exactly why many parents (like me) hate it. |
But are reading the responses from math teachers explaining that your child does not have to enter every step along the way? They can solve the problem on paper or in their head and then just type the answer into the first box. |
Again - this was not the case when MathSpace was first rolled out, which is when my own kids had to deal with it. Every step was required to be inputted and only in very specific ways. Glad to hear they’ve changed that (no doubt due to hundreds of complaints), but the experiences described here were NOT at all what my kids had. |
Long time FCPS math teacher here. You are incorrect. You could always just enter in your answer without entering in the individual steps. You and your children (and perhaps their teachers) must have not realized it and understandably got frustrated. |
I’ve used mathspace since it was first shown to teachers. You could always just type the answer. |
You didn’t take the time to watch the instructional videos from the company itself, did you? |
How do you know they were even given the instructional videos? |
You have to google them on your own. That’s the first thing I did when my son shared with me that the teacher said kids hate mathspace because it’s picky on how you input answers. I searched on how to input answers for algebraic equations. That’s where I learned that mathspace will accept any equivalent equation. And the final answer (x= whatever) is an equivalent equation. |
