My kids attended Neelsville quite a few years ago. The narrow hallways and stairwells are a huge problem during class changes. I hate to think of what would happen during an emergency. The huge ramp in the middle of the school is so steep that there is no way anyone in a wheelchair or on crutches could safely use it. The office is not near the front doors, so I don't know how a security vestibule could be constructed. Clearly, with the photos of the ceiling tiles, etc., something needs to be done now, even if they are temporary measures, like cleaning up the mold and replacing the ceiling tiles.
As for the person who snidely commented about how few parents were at the meeting, did you ever think about the fact that many of the parents have to work multiple jobs, often at night, and simply cannot take the time off to show up at a meeting? It shouldn't take a large group of parents showing up at a meeting to have a school with a healthy, safe environment! That is something that all children in this county should have! |
That may be so but the PP had a good point. Nobody cared until the privileged kids were assigned there. It sounds like diversifying these schools is having the intended impact since it will improve outcomes for many more students! |
That’s baloney. There are a number of school buildings that are significantly more deteriorated than Neelsville, even one of the - gasp! - W schools and the high profile magnet at Poolesville. MCPS is ignoring ALL of them. Let’s not make everything about race. |
So that's exactly what's so whack about this. People are willing to jump down on the folks from Clarksburg when in fact MCPS is the one who has been ignoring the school for years. So only now will they do something about it when a bunch of loud middle class parents who just got moved there are bitching about it. Wouldn't you be loud and angry about it too? Since when has it been bad to advocate for a good school for your kids? |
Wittmans getting an addition... |
Not sure if you saw and heard what he said in response to the parent complaints. He said Neelesville is an excellent school and he would be happy to send all 6 of his grandkids there. |
I would expect any school superintendent to say the same thing about any of their schools. While at the same time planning to improve their conditions. |
Ya sure. Parents aren't stupid and for him to say that is insulting their intelligence. |
Awww wa wa wa. I’ve heard 19,000 blacks call other blacks “nigga and “nigge*) and no one is ever disciplined. |
Agreed. This is disconcerting. I actually work in the detention center the one student referred to. We aren’t missing ceiling tiles.....why is this school? |
So what. Completely different context. |
Bingo! |
Which only proves that the condition of the school has nothing to do with outcomes. The population at Neelsville is such that parents have no involvement in their kids' education, and hence, the environment is horrendous...then pile on the physical conditions, and morale is down the tubes. Glad my kid will never be in a place like that. |
The context of this comment was the large group of parents that showed up at the public hearing for the boundary change last fall, to oppose their children getting reassigned to Neelsville MS. |
That comment says a whole lot about you. |
