Anyone else think the answers would be different if the person coming over was more professional like a tutor or music teacher instead of a blue collar workman?

Agreed. I had my 16 yr old in the house alone with a painter briefly last week (when I went to pick up other child). I told the painter that my teen and her dad would be coming home (although it was just teen and I told her to go in her room and lock the door). No on an 11 year old.

I'm a pretty relaxed parent too but this sets off alarm bells for me.

Nope.

In-home childcare jumps through hoops with background checks, references and still they aren’t trusted immediately. Nobody asks for references for a painter being home alone with a preteen or teen.
