My toddler gets 1-2 hours of tv per night

1-2 hours is nothing.

Why the hell did you do that? What were you thinking?

I’d try to keep it down to strictly an hour or less. I understand as I SAH w a preschooler (4.5) and toddler (2.5) and need the break sometimes too but 2 hours every day seems excessive. My 2 year old no longer naps (?) so tv time is a time for her to get a little rest too.

Why can’t your two year old simply have quiet time reading or playing in her room for an hour? Or a half hour or whatever time works for you.

Have you ever met a 2 year old? They do not do this. IME and that of my friends, this kind of independent play starts around 3.

Hahaha @ a 2 year old doing quiet time reading in their room. Good luck w that. That would not be a break for anyone. Unless you have a very quiet, calm 2 year old...which if you had that, they’d be napping so this wouldn’t be an issue.

What difference does it make? Kid is fine. Sorry screens didn't ruin him like you thought.

This is a totally different scenario than the OP is talking about. Limiting screen time when there are multiple adults at home is easy. Try being on your own with more than one kid under 3 for hours in the evening and get back to us.

NP here. Why did you have him then? Was he an oops?

I think it’s fine, as long as you are still talking to him, reading to him and ensuring outside time. I aim for an hour or more of outdoor play, plus art projects, reading and whatever else. As long as TV isn’t the main focus of the day.

I do this. I am a SAHM and we don’t have a tv. It’s not an option. Kids find other things to do.

If people want to use tv, that’s fine. But it’s not like it’s impossible to have a toddler who doesn’t watch tv on a regular basis.

Interesting article that addresses what screentime does to a developing brain.

This is a great TED Talk on the topic:

8:45 to 11:30 dives into the difference types of shows and if you're going to show your kids shows, what kinds to show them.

How old is your toddler? I think there is a big difference between 18 months and 3 years old.

We had zero screen time until age 2, then about 10 minute a day until age 3. Now at age 4 it's usually an hour a day (because he no longer naps), and I'm fine with that. But I think keeping it away when they are younger than 2 is important.

Eh, it is the 3rd kid with (much) older siblings. Not surprising.

My 4th kid is like this. He watches like 2 paw patrol episodes in the morning and then watches the shows(or game on their screens) that his older siblings watch in the afternoon when they come home from school .

NBD especially since I know it is all in moderation and he plays nicely for the remaining 12 hrs of day that he's awake.

Security kept coming and saying that they hear his footsteps and talking and that we need to stop him. Tv, Ipohne and tablet kept him still. I do hear my neighbors talk, walk and tv but somehow grown-up walking is ok, even our walking.

4-5 I'd say, but getting tired of those also and we are trying all sorts of board games. Uno is a hit, bought Mancala, Catan junior and many more.
