Blair Magnet vs. Richard Montgomery IB vs. BCC IB

Yes - regional magnets. All the schools already have an IB program, but now they will be open to students in other schools in their region. (RM will remain a county-wide magnet for next year's 8th graders, at least.)

When is this happening (and at what schools)?

In 2020-21 at Watkins Mill, Kennedy, and Springbrook. The region's each will serve haven't been announced yet. So this coming year's 8th graders will be able to apply for those programs.

Thanks (it’s nice to actually learn something on an MCPs thread)

I was poking around the MCPS website regarding the Blair application, but it looks like it isn't available yet for 2019. Can any parent who has been through the process provide some information regarding what the application involves? I see references on the MCPS website and in other DCUM searches to the CogAT test. When is that test administered for high school magnet testing?

Also, is there any difference between the IB program at BCC vs. the IB program at Richard Montgomery? Meaning, if DS wasn't accepted at Blair and decided to do an IB program, wouldn't he just do the one at BCC?

I know MCPS will have some meetings on some of this in the fall, but any information before then would be helpful.

I would go to the school closest to my home. I couldn't stand the commute and wouldn't want my kid going through that.

My kid got accepted into the RMIB program this year. He wants to continue swimming with RMSC NTG. Will he have time?

I think everyone will tell you it depends on your kid. Does work take him a long time? Does he procrastinate a lot? What are his goals? Is he going to be hooked for college based on swimming or does he need the near-perfect GPA for Harvard? And so on...

Thank you. He is very independent and responsible, He is also very efficient at learning. He is a decent swimmer as well. We are afraid of the workload that RMIB may have to offer. Wonder if any parents who have student athletes at RMIB that could comment on this.

I know a kid that did both. Do not know his grades but he is at a top college.

Got it. Good to know. Grades are not always the best prediction of success.

Yes. Many swim team members are also club swimmers and in the magnet program. You have to be highly organized with your time, but many kids are successful doing both.

If your goal is top college, go to regular school. It will be easier to get excellent grades and with excellent SAT scores and as a recruit should have a good shot anywhere.

The problem with IB is a 1500 SAT score is a yawn.

Thanks for your question! We are in a similar situation with our child playing one serious sport and advanced band, trying to decide between Blair/RMIB/Churchill. Will our child have time to do both these things while at the magnet program? I am aware that it is feasible in Churchill...
