I think I missed this the first time around, thank you!

I am trying but am so bad with her hair.

I'm OP and with coconut oil, I just use a tiny amount and rub it in like any other product.

This is what my mom did with me when I was little

Thanks, OP. I'm going to give it a go.

You need a mouisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Dont be afraid of oil.

OP here - this would require DD being willing to keep her goggles on, which is a whole other story and one of the biggest pains in my ass this summer, lol!

But honestly, PP, it's actually a brilliant idea, and I think I'm going to try it tonight!!

Let me know how it works for you. It certainly worked for my girls.

What conditioner/leave-ins would you recommend?

PP here (I didn't recommend coconut oil above). The thing with curly hair is everyone's hair likes different products. We like She Moisture leave in conditioner, Deva curl styling cream and wave maker, and gobs of pretty much any detangler spray or curl refresher.

Uh, what? Please brush curly hair. Just start at ends and work your way thru any tangles. How are you supposed to get edges down or smooth a ponytail without a brush?

A brush destroys curly hair. I have s daughter with curly hair who constantly gets compliments on her beautiful hair. We comb it with a comb everyday. If it’s tangled, a tiny amount of coconut oil makes it look lush and helps reactivate the curls. Sometimes I even add a little water if the curls are really frizzy but it’s rare that I need to do that.

After the hair is combed, you can help shape the curls with your fingers but that’s all! It is downright cruel to use a brush on curly hair - don’t do it! You’re basically creating tangles and split ends - ouch!

I'd quibble with this--if you brush with a bores hair brush, you don't create tangles. Something about the bores hair redistributes oil. Now, this doesn't work on all curly hair, and it creates more of a brushed out wave look than tight curls. But sometimes brushing can work for some hair.
