well no wonder Amy Chua defended Brett Kavanugh so emphatically

Daughter of Fierce Kavanaugh Defender Amy Chua to Clerk for … Brett Kavanaugh

In the summer of 2018, before the country knew who Christine Blasey Ford was, a simple case was being made for Brett Kavanaugh among a certain group of progressive elite: Judge Kavanaugh should become Justice Kavanaugh because he’s just such a darn swell guy. One of the most prominent figures to make that claim was Yale Law School professor and famed Tiger Mom Amy Chua, who wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal in July 2018 titled “Kavanaugh Is a Mentor To Women: I can’t think of a better judge for my own daughter’s clerkship.”

Chua’s qualifications for writing this op-ed came via the role she had played helping place judicial clerks as a member of Yale Law School’s clerkships committee. In the piece, she described several generic and anonymous accounts of Kavanaugh’s “incredible” mentorship, “legendary work ethic,” “commitment to excellence,” “humility,” and “decency.” As evidence of this decency, one anonymous clerk noted, “I’ve never seen him be rude to anyone in the building.” She also explained that her confidence in Kavanaugh was so great that her own daughter was scheduled to begin an appellate clerkship with him (one that likely would have to be postponed if the judge was confirmed to the Supreme Court). She concluded the piece by saying “for my own daughter, there is no judge I would trust more than Brett Kavanaugh to be, in one former clerk’s words, ‘a teacher, advocate, and friend.’ ”

When the op-ed was published in July, Above the Law Executive Editor Elie Mystal correctly noted that Kavanaugh’s “ ‘extraordinary’ ability to hire [Chua’s] daughter” was less of a legal qualification and more just something personally great for Chua’s daughter and Chua herself. As Mystal further elucidated, if Kavanaugh was confirmed, “Chua’s daughter will be at the top of [Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court clerkship] list next year,” making the idea that Chua herself did not have something personal to gain from his appointment a little bit outlandish. As Mystal put it, “Chua is just counting on you people who haven’t been educated in her exceptional parenting style to be too stupid to notice that.”

Can the editor of Above the Law (left wing blog) name just one female candidate to Kavanaugh's clerkship who is more qualified than Sophia? He can't.

that's absurd. there are likely hundreds if not thousands of young female law grads just as qualified as she is. This is payola, clear as day. Sophia will be ostracized by elite legal institutions and will have to scrape the bottom of the barrel after she peters out at her post-clerkship firm job.

Fortunately she will have at least a $250,000 signing bonus from a firm that hires her post-clerkship.

She may need to start making her own way in life. Her dad is under investigation and her mom was accused of “grooming” women to be picked by Kavanaugh.

BTW - did you hear that RBG praised Kavanaugh for hiring so many female clerks (ALL women) that this is the first time there are more women than men SCOTUS clerks?

There were lots of available women whose moms didn't help whitewash his nomination

It's a real bad look

You mean, stand up for innocent until proven guilty? Last I checked, defending the constitution is NOT whitewashing anything. Face it - that was a 30+ yr. old allegation with zero evidence to go on. Of course he should have been confirmed. You just didn't *want* a conservative on the court, so you and other Democrats decided to attempt a witch hunt. Sorry it failed.

Not sorry, thank god their fascism failed!

Sooo there's a reason his name wasn't on the original shortlist.

You care for the Supreme Court as much as the president does.

Actually "I Like Beer" is proving to be much more palatable than his school fellow Gorsuch, who by all accounts is delighting in turning things to the right and acting all cocky and entitled.

I absolutely despised "I Like Beer's" ridiculous and pitiable performance that day at his hearing, make no mistake. You could accuse him of purposefully treading lightly for a bit, making a point to hire all women clerks, acting like the good guy, staying as neutral as he can, in order to do away with his would-be-rapist image... but I actually think it's very much his own character. He's not Supreme Court material, but now he's in place, he's by far not the worst person there!!!

And don't complain about Amy Chua. She helps women with the practicalities of not closing doors for themselves in the name of feminism. Her daughters are extremely accomplished, and they are successful in their own right.

You mean helped her daughter get the job that every law student dreams of - but most have to get on their own merit, not with their tiger mom writing a sweet op-ed as a cover letter

Please just name one who applied and didn’t get it.

Why should we? Just because you won’t acknowledge that Kavanaugh is a bought and paid for swamp beast supported by swamp beasts doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t see favoritism.

You are imagining favoritism. The bar for a Supreme Court clerkship is very high. Only a small number qualifies. If you don't have evidence of who was bumped by the Tiger club, you are just making stuff up.

On the other hand, any high school kid is qualified to intern for Harvey Weinstein. To get that job, you do need some favoritism.

Look, as an Ivy law school grad with plenty of friends with top appellate and a few Supreme Court clerkships, I can tell you with 100000%%% certainty that there are MANY extremely qualified grads who could have taken her place, in an instant. She got it due to connections.

No she won't. That's not how this works. Those who benefit from the swamp don't end up getting taken down by it - they stay on top. They marry each other. They consolidate power. She'll do great in life. And someone else, who didn't have Amy Chua as her mom, will do worse.

Oh, I have no doubt she'll make oodles of money and have a big office. She just won't get the cultural and intellectual standing that people like her crave. No top law school will come close to touching her if she goes on the law prof market, for example. Mommy and daddy's influence does not extend that far.

Gorsuch is insufferable, true. Are there any Kav opinions or arguments so far that you think show his independence?

I'm aware Amy and her husband influenc their daughters' careers as much as they can - and so would you if you had that clout! My point is that her daughters are highly intelligent and accomplished, and that they might not even have needed the boost. It's not as if Amy's daughter was incompetent. I'm sure she will do well in her post.

Your credential doesn't give you authority on how many qualified female grads were applying for the Fall term of 2019 and also interested in working for Kavanaugh. You don't know and are imagining things.
