If you’re not expecting anyone, do you answer the door when someone knocks?

I look but don't answer unless it's a neighbor and I'm dressed and ready to see them.

I’m this PP. I just answered an unexpected knock. It was a mom dropping off stuff for a school event I’m running (I was not expecting her) and we just had a lovely chat!

No wonder society is so disconnected and anxious and depressed. You really wouldn’t have opened for this woman? How do you expect to build a community? “I’ll be your friend/neighbor but only if you ALWAYS text warn me first.” SAD.

I have a camera system and check the video first.

I always check who it is but only open for people I know or delivery people. I get a lot of unexpected packages that need to be signed for because they contain alcohol, so I always see who it is as I don’t want to miss those and have to trek to some UPS facility somewhere.

I have, but will open it from now on with the chain on. We live in condo that has front door. People visiting have mixed up the floors or my neighbor is complaining again.

Even if it’s someone you know, like a neighbor or family?

I just came back to the thread. Of course I answer if it’s family and if it’s a known neighbor. I don’t answer for solicitors or strangers. Luckily, I have a ring doorbell and I can speak to them that way if I need to.

No, I might peak but most likely won't answer since it would be someone I don't know.

Not in DC, but had an unusual flurry of Dem/Rep activists asking for our votes in primaries and also back in 2016. DH had fun with them.

No. No one would come to my door who I want to see who can't call me and tell me they are there.

If you have my number, you should have texted me at least a few minutes earlier. If you couldn't be bothered to do then, I can't be bothered to open the door. If you don't have my number, you're a stranger or solicitor and... No.

I'd only open it if you were on fire, or an obvious, serious emergency, or the cops.

Don't open for the cops unless they have a warrant.

I agree with this, but there was a water emergency at my apartment and the maintenance manager gave them permission. And I didn't know he could, and I said a lot of things they didn't like when they forced entry.

Nope. By appointment only.

Cops forced entry for a water-related emergency? Not the landlord or someone from the water company--?

Yup. I almost always do. I have a "no soliciting" sign, so if I can tell it's a salesperson I'll crack the door and tell them they missed the sign, but my neighborhood is suuuuuuuper friendly and we always have neighbors coming and going.

In all honesty, it all depends on how I look.

If I haven’t showered or brushed my teeth, likely not.
Ditto if I am not wearing a bra.

But will if I look decent and the knock sounds “urgent.”
