Lyft often has better pricing and better pay-outs to drivers. But long term with driverless cars UBER DOES NOT MAKE CARS. Lyft with GM makes cars. GM is also long term planning on rolling out GM cars you buy that are driverless you lease or buy on loan. When you park them you turn on switch for them to be Lyft cars, the cars drive themselves and money car makes pays your loan or lease. Pretty cool. |
Driverless is vaporware. |
Then what is https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/07/lyft-riders-in-phoenix-will-soon-be-able-to-hail-waymo-driverless-cars.html ? |
Wow, The poster above is clueless. Driverless is the future. And the future is nearly here. |
A PR release masking as journalism. A pokey taxi running around flat, rain fee, snow free suburb of Phoenix. It’s just now getting good at left turns (it used to make 3 rights to go left) https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/business/amp-stories/self-driving-car-waymo-robo-taxi/ It’s maybe not vaporware but it is a LONG way off https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19954704 |
Uber lost $5.2 billion in the second quarter of 2019. Lyft is losing money, too. How long can a company lose huge amounts of money and stay in business? I agree that self-driving cars are vaporware. Well, vaporware plus hype. Vehicles that can go autonomously under limited circumstances - shuttles, circulators with tiny routes, combine harvesters - sure. Vehicles that can go anywhere, anytime autonomously? Nope. |

“Uber is freezing hiring for software engineers and product managers across its US and Canadian workforce, the company acknowledged to Bloomberg on Friday. The shift was reported by Yahoo earlier in the day. The freeze does not apply to Uber's autonomous vehicle and freight-shipping divisions.
The news comes a day after Uber reported second-quarter operating losses of $5.4 billion—a new record for the company. That figure exaggerates Uber's quarterly burn rate because it includes more than $4 billion in one-time charges related to Uber's initial public offering.” https://arstechnica.com/cars/2019/08/uber-freezes-engineering-hires-amid-mounting-losses/ |
This is fake news. Uber has its own autonomous vehicle design unit in house. And a division focused on expanding to aviation. Read a lot more about their strategy- they are valued higher than Lyft for good reason, which is that their business fundamentals are superior. |
