That is a tiny problem for a limited number of individuals, and they let you have your way. Yet you complain? |
The two best, most inspiring teachers my kids had at Deal happen to have been their World Geography and World History teachers. Both really inspired my kids to dive deep in those subjects. |
This sounds a lot like the same smug tone of the YY hater (nope, don't have kids there, but have read the YY threads). |
Yes, we got our way, after asking for help from the DCPS Chief Student Advocate and DC Public School Ombudman, fabulous ladies. The Deal admins and DCPS World Languages senior people we dealt with were total rednecks about language acquisition. Didn't have a clue what we were talking about, didn't care, and were truly obnoxious. We should all complain about how poorly DCPS is run compared to the other school systems in our Metro area from time to time. |
Get a grip. No connection to Yuying and never wanted one. We speak Japanese. |
14:54 PP, why wasn’t your kid challenged in math? Did they not test into a high enough level? |
I find the math comment peculiar too. The math teaching at Deal in 6th was a bit uneven, but the advanced math curriculum and teaching was strong (Algebra I and Geometry). I expect the Algebra II was also good but my child did not take that. |
Drives me nuts how DC parents generally think in terms of putting up with almost any idiocy DCPS dishes out....because they're lucky to have access to a halfway decent school in this s#$* show of a system. |
Actually, you sound like you think a whole system should revolve around your kids' unique needs. |
This thread was about how people supplement, especially EOTP where the schools may not have as many advanced course offerings or the teachers may be stretched with more classroom management issues. So, for the Deal posters who love Deal, cool. For the Deal posters who found it uneven or inadequate--what do you do to supplement? |
Bumping up again to raise the question of what people do to supplement. A poster on the Deal/DCI thread mentioned spending 10K/year on supplements, what do parents actually do to supplement? |
We have 3 kids in DCPS and we use tutors during the school year, and Beast Academy and academic camps during the summer. One kid at Deal, the other 2 are in ES. |
We do private school summer classes in writing and ELA. |
We do Khan academy for math. Otherwise, reading (both silently and parents to kids), and regular writing practice (mostly through a journal). |
What's the big Deal?! Many Europeans take 4 languages and that's in countries with only 1 official language. I'm sure your kid can do it. Spanish is not a hard language. Trilingual? Vow! |
