Experience with College Waitlist

DS is currently in waitlist limbo for 4 schools. He is not happy with any of his acceptances. Trying to get him to pick one of his 4 acceptances right now and he is not thrilled.

Really ? Our counselor said they didn’t contact wait listing colleges but would take the call in case any reached out to the school (Sidwell). This seems like an overly passive approach.

People do get off the waitlists, but the number of kids that they put on the waitlist is just ridiculous. It just isn't fair to the kids, it leaves some with a false hope.

I completely agree. Princeton does the same (loads up the waitlist with soft denials). It's really not fair to the kids.

If you know anyone on the Princeton board of trustees that sometimes can lead to movement off the wait list.

Point may be that having a wl slot overshadows the existing admissions, creating false hope. The odds are very, very slim and he should just move on. Once the false hope is gone, may warm up to acceptances.

In the 6 months since he applied it has become more clear what he wants in a college. Sadly, this was not clear when he made his list last September.
