Just buy some practice books and give her some timed tests.

We did that approach, and also purchased the SSAT online unlimited testing. We would like to explore the tutoring/classroom approach.

Try Prep Matters (locations throughout DMV) or Top Score (they will come to you).

I haven't used any test prep services, but PrepMatters has a few locations so might be convenient to you?

I am sorry your child didn't get in this year. All I can say is to hang in there. My son applied to one school 5 times before finally getting accepted. It was worth the agony; he loves his school and is thriving.

Thank you for your suggestions and perspective! She worked really hard on her own, and as parents we tried to help her with SSAT prep but both DH and I didn't do that well on our own SAT/grad school type entrance tests.

She is very resilient and is already motivated to reapply next year for 10th. And who knows, maybe she'll get off waitlist for 9th.

was this a "big3" school? Was he finally admitted for high school? Curious because we seem to be heading in this direction with one.

It is. He was finally admitted during middle school.

The director of admissions did keep encouraging us to reapply.

Where did your DC apply ? My kid got in the 90’s on the SSAT and we didn’t even bother with the top 3 - too expensive and didn’t seem like there would be a great chance of her being admitted. We know lots of kids who go to those schools and many of the families have a lot of money to share with the schools and/or had people help their kids get in.
We didn’t have that angle so our DD applied to what you would call a 2nd tier private schools and she received a great education with some great kids.
Perhaps broaden yoyr list of schools?

we did a mix of "tier 1" and "tier 2" schools. one should've been a definite safety. i also think we just require too much aid. outside of crappy test scores my kid has straight As, great recs, and overall is a super friendly happy kid (other people's words, not mine) so i'm feeling super rejected. this is also bringing up a lot of my other insecurities but bleh. i also really don't like our home public school so lots of stress for me.
