Cheerleading - not sure I want my DD to do this

Anonymous
My daughter did cheer for awhile. I never could get comfortable with her basically cheering for the boys
It just seemed so sexist to me. She didn’t like it really and dropped. It also was very time consuming

We cheered for girls and boys basketball back in the 90’s. Has that changed?

At our school it was the boys football team.

Bunch of ugly 40+ women, who were even uglier at 16 years old. Awe... was The head cheerleader mean to you in the cafeteria?
Get over it.

I dunno. The cheerleaders back in my day (90s) weren’t even that cute. Even back then it was considered fairly lame. I think post title IX, most reasonably athletic girls play an actual sport.

But yes I’m sure in the 50s and 60s, the head cheerleader totally dominated the cafeteria.

I am sure almost all boys in HS want to sleep with cheerleaders if given a chance. Why would any parents want to put their daughter in that position?

Cheerleaders showing off their booties and panties in front of HS boys is a bad idea, IMHO.

Why is your son telling you who he wants to sleep with?

I bet you dollars to donuts the women on this thread bemoaning cheerleading, saying it’s only one step away from the pole, too revealing, etc. are same the women who go on and on about how terrible slut shaming is, we shouldn’t judge women for how they dress, consider themselves feminists, and so on.

It’s always amusing to me.

Comparison to nfl is idiotic. Cheerleaders wear their hair UP. No jewelry, minimal makeup, and they SWEAT.

Seriously
Watch some of the competitive cheer on ESPN sometime. Posters here really couldn’t be more clueless.

The skirts are athletic, like tennis skirts, runner and volleyball briefs (not even shorts or skirts) and the diving suits that are cheeky now. These are all cut for performance and I support it as a female athlete. Even the cheeky swimsuits and I was a diver. In my sport, lots of skin and hard nipples. But you know what, we think about the sport beyond the outfit. Think of bodies as amazing muscular machines! Not sexual. Geez.

Ex-cheerleader here and even I wouldn't defend those uniforms.

So what should gymnasts be wearing? Because these girls and guys are gymnasts. Would you defend cheerleaders in just leotards? I sure would. It's suitable.

Do you think gymnasts should cover up more

We are big believers that people regret what they don't even try for, more than what they tried and failed. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. So she tried out. And then she made the team.

Apparently, it was competitive. She should be proud. I should be happy for her. But, I really don't love this - it seems either suburban or ghetto. Am I wrong? Help me see this in a new light, because right now I just miss the math team.

Suburban or ghetto? What does that even mean? Where does that leave cheerleaders in wealthier city areas?

Not Suburban/Applebee's culture, and not inner city twerking on the playing field.

The racism in these posts is grosser to me than anything to do with cheerleading.

It sends a message. It always has. Shake your butts and flash your crotches in short skirts for the pleasure of guys who are watching you. Not a great message.

Cheerleading is actually one of the most dangerous sports because they do a lot of stuff with no spotters, no protective gear.

And it's gotten a lot more dangerous than 20 years ago. I think it's because of all of the "cheerleading competitions" and the pressure to up the ante and do lots of flips, etc.

That said, it's hard to say no now because you already let her try out.

I'm not sure what you mean by the suburban or ghetto description. I wouldn't worry about that. I'd be more concerned about safety. Try to meet the coach.

You literally talk to your son about which girls he wants to bang, and you are chastising parents of girls for letting them wear cheerleading outfits? Okay. I see why you had to be clear about the consensual aspect of his fantasies.
