College for a good student that does not test well

I think the PPs on this thread that are recommending SLACs are not paying much attention to her interests. SLACs will not have the majors that she wants.

This is patently not true-every SLAC has physics and music, most have environmental science. And a commitment to undergraduate research that a kid doesn't have to be savvy and socially adept to maneuver into. Most SLACs have a higher per capita placement in STEM graduate programs than any other institutions.

50% of *all* high school seniors in the US have an A average GPA. Your kid is average. It’s very likely your kid won’t finish their bachelors degree and/or will be an awful college student majoring in some joke department.

According to https://www.insidehighered.com/admissions/article/2017/07/17/study-finds-notable-increase-grades-high-schools-nationally, the average grad point average is 3.38. I am not sure if that is weighted on unweighted. But, either was a 3.8+ is considerably above avenge (Unweighted).

3.38 is A-/B+ average. Grades are meaningless unless they're backed up with 4s and 5s on AP exams and a top ACT/SAT.

UChicago went test optional last summer. That does not mean that a student with a "mediocre" GPA could get admitted without a test score - on the contrary, that seems unlikely. Also, UChicago is need blind for admission.

AU's support for students with learning disabilities, autism, etc. is really great. And while you can major in physics, they excel in social sciences. Their international relations programs are top notch. Not sure it's a great match for OP's kid. (But it might be! Never hurts to check it out. Just go in with eyes open)

Kids there have tippy top test scores. The only way your kid is getting in there without taking a standardized test is if they invent something or cure a disease .

You can also take courses at other local universities while attending AU.
AU is a school that will hold a kids’ hand if it’s needed.
