Do you feel awkward around high net worth people?

I work with a woman who mentioned her guest cottage.

I don’t feel awkward but the ones we know who are ultra rich are not our closest friends. Money isn’t awkward. We are well educated and high income. We will never be ultra high net worth. I’m sure some people may consider us rich. We have a seven figure income but still have the same lifestyle as when we were mid six figures.

It totally depends on whether they have the art of making people at ease or not. Wealth doesn't come into it, really.

I can relate OP. I’m a pretty typical higher paid public employee making around $125,000. a year but in my case I’ve become a self made millionaire from both saving and investing over the years. With this comes being around wealthy people more often including our international travels. Often it’s uncomfortable trying to talk to or join a group of these people. Basically we don’t have have a lot in common other then maybe money which of course isn’t talked about anyway. Talking about each other’s Rolex watches is about the extent of it. The difficulty is when they ask about what I do for a living.

I still find being around “average” people like myself much more comfortable and down to earth.

Most of the wealth we are around is new money and all the talk is about the latest trip or home reno, which is both awkward and boring after the first few minutes.
