The homework, including reading, for a kindergartner shouldn't last longer than 30 minutes a night.

And, for the record, I'm a SAHM.

What if you weren't?

This would still be my approach. Kids do better when they practice at home. That was true for me when I was a kid and it's been true for my own children.

It’s totally busy work and definetly not necessary, but right now DC seems into it, so we will do it. If it’s a burden on your family, don’t do it and just explain to your kid that’s it’s not a big deal to not do HW in kindergarten.

Parents balk at this every year and it doesn’t change, so unfortunately I don’t think a petition will help hangs your situation. Some kids rally do need the practice, especially those that don’t come from a print rich environment. But again, if you don’t want to don’t do it. I am positive you won’t be the only one.

+1. You really don’t have to do the homework. If your child wants to do it and it isn’t causing problems, you can let them do it. But if the computer stuff is an issue, you can tell your kid that homework in K is a thing you do sometimes, when it fits into the family schedule, but not a requirement. I don’t think it’s worth letting yourself get too upset either way. And I say that as someone who also thinks it is ridiculous to assign homework in lower elementary.

No doubt. But we are only talking about kindergarten homework here. You had homework in kindergarten? You support homework in kindergarten?

I agree with this. Not for K, but definitely for 1st and up

OP here. Thought about this but my kid was obsessed. Anticipating it, talking about it, stressing about it when they couldn't get onto ST Math the first day - seriously tried for hours on end and cried and cried when couldn't get on.

I am a little confused about how this fits with narrative that you need to bag to get him to do it.

Hearst perhaps?

At the two WOTP DCPSs my kids have gone to, no homework — just encouragement to read and play games.

And the answer is known on this! Research and education experts say early homework is pointless (or worse, since it detracts from the playing).

Some teachers say they give homework because the parents expect it. So you parents who like homework to know what is going on, establish routine, etc. — go jump in a lake. You can solve your needs some other way. Don’t mess up evenings for the rest of us.

Also that they only have 2 hours a day (‘cried for hours on end’).

I have an anxiety disorder. and OP you sound like I did before I got medical treatment. If you are stressed about this stuff your kid will be. Please talk to your doctor.

My child's K teacher at Janney last year assigned no homework, aside from reading with your child for 15 minutes a night. I heard that other K teachers did assign homework however. So at least at Janney, it seems to vary from teacher to teacher.

OP, have you addressed this with your child’s teacher directly? With your principal? What did they say?

It also varies from teacher to teacher at our EOTP school. Our K teacher was assigning weekly homework at the beginning of the school year (her first year at the school), but by the end we weren’t getting much HW anymore.

None at Janney either. Once a week they send something home but it's totally optional.

Two points:

First, you aholes who are shaming OP are totally missing the point.

Homework in K is RIDICULOUS. Kids are exhausted after a full day of school and, as many PPs correctly note, it just turns into a tear filled battle to get something done that it pointless. Agreed that there are parents out there who are convinced that no homework in K will be something frowned upon on the Harvard application, but let's not cater to their insanity either. Homework does become a bigger issue the older they get, but this is K, not middle or high school.

Best thing to tell the teacher - we're not doing it. There is NOTHING the school can do about it. Save yourself the grief and stay strong!

Which is fine. But OP doesn't seem to have the fortitude to do that, and would rather go on a late night DCUM rant.

And it doesn't turn into a tear-filled battle for many families. Your insistence that's it's insane is as intolerant.
