New to school- when do we hear from?

Oyster doesn't require school supplies ... each family is requested to make a small contribution (less than $50 if I remember correctly), then the school buys in bulk. Teachers then draw down from the school supply closet as the year goes by.

(We've asked teachers if they need additional supplies that aren't available, but buy and large they indicate that they are getting what they need.)

We feel fortunate. This system helps there be equity in that the same brands are utilized, resources are spent where they most need to be.

Instead, we focus on "school" supplies like backpack, lunchbox, clothing if DC has grown.

Anonymous wrote:I do with schools would send out teacher assignments and class supply lists before August. We are always on vacation the last two weeks of summer break (the dead zone between when camps end and school starts - it's the best option for us to take a vacation) and come back one day before school starts. Its's really hard to fit in a trip to get school supplies while adjusting back to non-vacation life schedule with one day before school.

Alas, our school tends to send out the packet last minute and so we're scrambling to get everything together the night before.

Sooooo. The school should adjust and rush it's own timelines so that your vacation is most convenient? Now I've heard everything.

Huh??? A lot of families leave town the week before DCPS starts. There are few, if any, camp options that week.

Huh? I've never had trouble finding a camp for the last week.

Good for you! You deserve a cookie.

Maryland schools don't go back until after labor day. Middle of August camps are a dime a dozen.

I would hope the school has its act together well before 2 weeks to the school start.

Sending supply lists on Aug. 1 does not mean a school doesn't have their act together. People like you should really just enroll in private school where you will never be inconvenienced.
